Maskeliya is a Town in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. A drive on the Avissawella / Hatton A7 road, passing Ginigathena, and there on you will reach Norton Bridge and town. Passing through this town, you can catch a glimpse of the Saptha Kanya mountain range also known as the Seven Virgin hills. These hills were famous for its mysteries tale which dates back to 1974 when a Martinair Flight from Indonesia crashed into these mountains shortly before landing. A memorial sign has been built in the town, which is several miles from the crash site, a tire which was recovered from the crash site has been put on display to the public.

Adam’s Peak also known as Sri Pada could also be seen in the surroundings beyond the Moussekelle reservoir. The road to Adam’s Peak is through the Maskeliya town, so you will see many pilgrims pass by or even base themselves in Maskeliya during the season. It is formed by Maskeliya Oya near the confluence of Kehelgamuwa Oya and Maskeliya Oya which forms Kelani River. Which is quiet a beautiful scenic site not to be missed. Norton Villa is 15 minutes’ walk to Laxapana water falls.

The old Maskeliya town was initially located where the Moussekelle reservoir is now. The reservoir was built over 5 decades ago inundating the old town of Maskeliya, the new town was relocated uphill. During severe drought when the Moussekelle reservoir dries up, you can catch a glimpse of the old Maskeliya town where you will see many ruins of Kovils, Buddhist temples, Mosques and old bridges. Which is now a famous tourist site.
