Car Rentals: What to Do Before Driving Away

If you’re someone who rents vehicles often, you might already know a lot of the things we’re going to tell you in this blog.

For those of you looking to rent for the first time or those who feel their last Car Rental experience wasn’t quite up to par, we’ve got some expert pointers.

Even with the best of car Rental companies misunderstandings and confusion may sometimes happen. At times certain things might be overlooked which is why it is important to run an inspection of the vehicle you’re taking out on rent.

What to Do Before Driving Away

Statistically speaking, the age bracket that uses rental cars the most in the U.S. is people between the ages of 25 and 34. Given that your late twenties and early thirties are periods where you have a hundred things going on, overlooking things now and then it isn’t uncommon.

Here are some things you need to make sure you do before you before driving out of the lot and away in your rental.

Keep Records

The first thing you want to do is inspect the vehicle and record the condition you receive the vehicle in. You can do this by taking pictures of the car from all sides. Zoom in on dents, scratches and other blemishes so that you can prove you weren’t responsible for them if need be.

Tires

Always check the tires, including the spare tire. You don’t want to drive off with tires that are too run down. Check the grip ridges. If they’re too shallow or eroded, maybe ask for a change. Also make sure the tires do not show signs of any major damage or weakness.

Electronics

Make sure the electronics on the car you’re looking to rent are in full working order. Turn on the headlights, check your indicators and brake lights as well as well as the window and lock switches if they are automated. You should check the air-conditioning/heating and stereo as well if you need them.

Make sure you report anything that is out of order and have what you needed fixed before you exit the lot.

Under the Hood

A quick look under the hood to make sure everything is in ship shape is never a bad idea. Make sure levels of important car fluids such as oil as well as anti-freeze and battery water are adequate. Put the key in the ignition and let the engine run for a bit. Does it sound smooth?

Final Scan and Spin

Last of all; give the car a final scan for anything you may have missed. Check upholstery, under the seats (incase the last clients left something behind) and in places like the glove box. Once this is done, ask if you can take the car for a test spin within the lot if need be. This is to see that the vehicle you’re about to rent is responsive and so you can settle in to the feel of it.

All Done!

After having done the five checks mentioned above, you should be good to go! Chances are, if you rent a car from a reliable car rental company, you might not have to worry so much. That being said it’s always better to be safe as opposed to sorry!
