10 Southern California Spots To See Before Your J-1 Visa Expires

While it seems like summer just started, the sad fact is, it will be over before we know it. If you were lucky enough to come to the Los Angeles area with a J-1 work visa this year, you’ve probably been working hard and hopefully enjoying some sunny California living. And while all good things must come to an end, we hope you’ll be able to see some of Southern California’s best places before you depart.

By now, hopefully, you’ve experienced some of the best tourist attractions in Los Angeles, like the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Griffith Observatory. Before you leave the US, consider looking into a low cost car rental Los Angeles company and getting a vehicle so you can explore further and see some of our more offbeat and remote attractions. Super Cheap Car Rental is the top rated underage car rental Los Angeles company, so if you’re under the age of 25, you won’t have to worry about renting from us.

Once you have secured a reliable vehicle for the duration of your time here, use that time wisely and explore as many of these places as you possibly can.

  1. Sunny Jim’s Cave, La Jolla

Drive about two hours south of Los Angeles and you’ll be in the beautiful San Diego County. Sunny Jim’s Cave is located in La Jolla, and it’s one of the few sea caves that is accessible by land. You’ll start at The Cave Store and go down a hand-dug tunnel into the cave, which is pretty amazing to see in person.

  1. The Whaley House

Do you believe in ghosts? The Whaley House, which is located in Old Town San Diego, is thought to be one of the most haunted places America. It’s now a museum that is open to the public by day—and if you’re feeling very brave, you can schedule a private tour at night.

  1. Solvang

Solvang is is located 155 miles north of Los Angeles, near the picturesque community of Santa Barbara. It’s a Danish-style town complete with authentic architecture and delicious bakeries, not to mention some of the finest wine in the region. If you can get the time off work, try and spend a couple of days exploring this charming town.

  1. Ojai

If you want to see quirky California culture at its finest, drive your affordable Los Angeles car rental about two hours north of L.A. to Ojai. Ojai is home to some pretty great attractions, from the breathtaking St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel to the one-of-a-kind Bart’s Books, the largest independently owned outdoor bookstore in the country. And if you like wine tasting and fine dining, you’ll love it here.

  1. Laguna Beach

Hopefully anyone who spends a summer in Los Angeles is able to experience some of the area’s best beaches, like Santa Monica and Malibu. But if you get the chance, head to Laguna Beach, which is undoubtedly the gem of Orange County. There’s a reason the charming beach town and pristine stretches of sand are favorite celebrity hangouts.

  1. Knott’s Berry Farm

Disneyland and SeaWorld are both great. But if you can only make it to one theme park this summer, make it this one. Knott’s Berry Farm has been drawing crowds for almost a century. They have something for everyone, and people who go tend to genuinely enjoy themselves. For $70, you can get a ticket to both Knott’s Berry Farm and Knott’s Soak City, so you can enjoy two parks for one price.

  1. Joshua Tree National Park

Located in the desert about 140 miles east of Los Angeles, Joshua Tree National Park is an iconic destination for Californians and tourists alike. Go hiking, go rock climbing, take beautiful nature photos or just enjoy the unique scenery you won’t find anywhere else.

Palm Springs is another iconic vacation destination for Americans, and it has been a popular place for movie stars to “get away from it all” since the 1920s. If you like to golf or you’ve ever wanted to try, this is definitely the place to do it. Take a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to the Chino Canyon summit for life-changing views of the desert landscapes.

  1. Catalina Island

Catalina Island is one of California’s Channel Islands, and it’s known for its wildlife, camping, and luxurious resorts. That’s one of many fun things you’ll find to do on this island.

  1. The RMS Queen Mary

Located in Long Beach, the Queen Mary is a historic hotel that was once a beautiful British ship. In 1936, the Queen Mary departed from Southampton, England, for her maiden voyage, full of rich and famous passengers. Her last cruise in 1967 was to Long Beach, where she remained. The Queen Mary is said to be the most haunted hotel in the state.
