1. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary (Periyar Tiger Reserve)

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, locating in Thekkady is the perfect combination of nature’s bounty with great scenic beauty and rich biodiversity. Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India and is considered as the most protected area for the elephants and the tigers. Other than them you can also see sambar, foxes, mouse deer, Indian wild dog, lion-tailed macaque. It is also the habitat for the rarely seen white tigers and Nilgiri Tahr. Tourists can also enjoy boat cruising at the famous Periyar Lake. 2. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

This popular wildlife sanctuary in Kerala is located in the rain shadow area of the Western Ghats, which receives only 48 days of rainfall a year, unlike other Kerala’s sanctuaries.  It is the second habitat of the endangered giant grizzled squirrel of India. The sanctuary offers the unique advantage of watching its fascinating wildlife such as elephants, spotted deer, sambar, Hanuman langur and even peacocks at close quarters from the road without going deep into the jungles. Dry deciduous forests, high sholas and some grasslands add to the diversity of the sanctuary.

3. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the most famous wildlife reserves in Kerala, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is a true haven for all the wildlife enthusiast and nature lovers. Elephants are seen in this wildlife park mainly during the dry season. The Idukki wildlife sanctuary has a rich biodiversity and rich avifauna. Other than elephants, you can get an opportunity to see various species of snakes such as the cobra, krait and the viper. This wildlife sanctuary also houses a number of birds such as woodpeckers, black bulbuls, jungle fowls, laughing thrushes, mynas, kingfishers and peafowls. Boating and trekking are the leisurely activities that can be enjoyed here.

4. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary) is situated at Kumarakom in Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of Vembanad Lake. The main attractions of this wildlife sanctuary in Kerala are the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron and the water duck. The migratory birds include Flycatcher, Teal, Siberian Stork, Crane and Wood Beetle which are seen during their respective migratory season. Beyond the sanctuary, one can take a boat ride in Vembanad Lake or along the Kavanar River.

5. Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in the southern part of the Western Ghats in Pathanapuram in Kollam district is the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary. The thing that you might not know about this sanctuary is it is constituted mainly for the protection of the highly endangered endemic hardwood tree Shenduruny after which the sanctuary is named and known for. This wildlife sanctuary is also the home to many endangered species such as elephants, tigers, bison, leopards, lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri langurs, sambar, wild boar, deer and others.

6. Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary

Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot situated in Kakkayam town of Kozhikode district in the south Indian state Kerala. This is the 16th Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala with a mission to protect the rare species of flora and fauna. The enchanting waterfalls of Urakkuzhi, the dam and the rich forest area make this a favourite spot for tourists on Kerala tour. The vegetation is diverse and you can find a variety of mammals in the forest area. Also, over 200 species of medicinal plants are found here along with about 50 ferns.

7. Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the must-visit sanctuaries in Kerala. Unlike the others, this Sanctuary has many hill ranges. Trekking is a major attraction here and very much loved by tourists. The entire area is covered in tropical and semi-evergreen forests and is a truly riveting sight. Also, it is a home to wide range of animals such as elephants, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, Nilgiri Langur, Hanuman Langur and the Malabar Giant Squirrel.

8. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful retreats of Kerala and is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. It is joined to two other wildlife parks – Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the northeast and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu on the southeast. This sanctuary is considered as the safest heavens for different species of vultures like the White-rumped Vultures and the Red-headed Vultures.  A visit to the Sanctuary offers tourists a chance to witness the efforts made by the management to conserve the biological reserve of the park, which is truly amazing.
