It’s Hot, Hit The Beach, But Don’t Forget Your Teeth

If you ask the folks in Lisbon and the Algarve what the weather in the north of Portugal is like, you’ll hear reports of gloomy rain, overcast days, and colder temperatures.

For the record, this little corner of Europe has not escaped climate change and weather is not all that predictable anymore, ANYWHERE. Today, for example, the north had the highest temperatures in the country (max 28C) and the Algarve’s high was 22C.

But whether north or south —that’s neither here nor there, really. When you live on the coast, any day short of a storm deserves a visit to the Beach, right?

Plus, my brain is seasonally confused: I spent most of the winter sweating in Southeast Asia, returned to an unseasonably warm and dry Portugal, then hit a chilly spell recently. Today was a temperature whiplash.

But I was determined to go to the beach at some point, even if it was an excuse to recalibrate my confused wardrobe skin tone!

Ice was especially happy to be back around the dunes, an area that always holds intriguing smells. It’s funny how he didn’t spot the Teeth and glasses, though, even after I’d pointed them out. He was far too preoccupied.

Ice would make a terrible airport sniffer dog:

(sniff) "Drugs? Who cares! I smell CHOURIÇO and PRESUNTO!"

It was at the edge of the boardwalk at Praia de Angeiras Norte where I found this set of teeth that led to the sand. Nearby was a pair of glasses, presumably belonging to the same owner as the teeth. Which got me wondering:

  • Did they fall out of a pocket?
  • Aren’t teeth stored in a container? Where’s the container?
  • How much does a custom pair of teeth cost?
  • Why would a person take teeth out at the beach?
  • If the teeth were not removed at the beach, were they carried around to be re-inserted after the beach?
  • What kind of Easter lunch can a person without teeth enjoy?

So many questions.

I don’t expect to know the answers, because I put the lost items on top of a post for maximum visibility, near where I first found them. And for even greater exposure, I splashed these teeth all over my social media: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are participants in this Lost Teeth Campaign, and now the blog. This’ll be the most publicized set of teeth in Portugal.

It did occur to me that maybe I should leave the things with a business close by, but tomorrow is Sunday and many places are closed, especially Easter Sunday. I’m hoping for Best Case Scenario: that the person would return to the beach, find the wooden post, be reunited with teeth and glasses pronto, and carry on with chewing and reading.

In any case, if I hear any news of the owner being reunited with their stuff, I will update this post. And if you happen to visit Praia de Angeiras Norte, do check out their fetching calçadas, below.
