How to Book a Summer Holiday

Dreaming of that Summer holiday? As the weather gets warmer, more of us are wondering whether it’s a good time to book a Summer Holiday. Here in the UK, we are well catered for when it comes to summer holiday packages and deals. In fact, it can be overwhelming finding the best deal for your summer holiday break.

So… We’ve decided to put this guide together to make it easy for you to plan and book a summer holiday.

As veterans of summer travel, we’ve looked at a mixture of the best destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Near East (plus some slightly further flung options too).

How Much Should I Budget for a Summer Holiday?

When planning a summer holiday, having a budget will help you plan and find the best deals for you. And if you’re planning to travel with family, this goes for double.

So how much does it cost to go on a summer holiday from the UK?

In general, during the summer holiday months of July and August, prices climb steeply. This includes those budget flights and holiday packages, meaning you’re less likely to find a bargain or ‘good deal’. That’s not to say they’re not out there though.

In general, for a European flight from a larger UK airport, expect to pay between £150-300 per person return, excluding extra baggage. You can try shopping around using Skyscanner to find the best flight deals.

When it comes to holiday packages and hotels, you can expect to pay anything from around £1000 per person, up to… Well, the sky is the limit.

With that said, you can often find deals on sites such as Vrbo for apartments in popular locations for anything from £1000 to £2000 for a week with 4 to 6 beds. In fact, we think Vrbo has become a better source of budget accommodation than Airbnb, especially during the summer months in Europe.

Try it out and run a search for your preferred summer holiday destination on our handy widget.

So if you’re wondering how much to budget for a 7 day summer holiday in Europe, estimate at least around £1200 per person, for flights and accommodation.

However you can keep costs down by choosing self catering apartments, instead of popular hotel complexes, and choosing flights at awkward times such as late at night or early in the morning.

When is the Best Time to Book a Summer Holiday?

Timing is crucial when it comes to booking a summer holiday. To secure the best deals, consider the following tips:

  1. Book early: Many tour operators and airlines offer early bird discounts, which can result in significant savings. Start looking for deals as early as January or February, as this is when many companies launch their summer promotions. If you’re reading this at the time of publication, then obviously that time has passed, so there is no time like the present! The sooner the better for the best summer holiday deals…
  2. Be flexible: If you can be flexible with your travel dates and destination, you’ll have a better chance of finding a great deal. Avoiding peak travel times will help keep costs down, but pretty much any time in the summer holiday is peak time. If you are in the position to book just outside of school holidays, you could grab a great bargain.
  3. Keep an eye on sales: Travel companies often have sales throughout the year. Sign up for newsletters and follow your favourite operators on social media to stay informed about special offers and last-minute deals. This also includes last minute deals in the holidays too. Keep your eyes peeled for a bargain.
  4. Use comparison websites: Websites like Skyscanner, Kayak, and Expedia allow you to compare prices from multiple providers, ensuring you get the best deal possible. For hotels, we like Trivago, Vrbo and Booking.com.

When to Go on a Summer Holiday

The ideal time for a summer holiday depends on your destination and personal preferences. It might also depend on whether you have kids or not – which will likely mean you HAVE to go during peak season.

Here are some factors to consider when planning your trip:

  1. Weather: If you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine, aim for the months of June, July, and August. However, be prepared for higher temperatures and large crowds in popular destinations. For milder weather and fewer tourists, consider travelling in late May or early September through until about early October.
  2. Festivals and events: Europe and North Africa host numerous festivals and events throughout the summer months. Research your chosen destination to see if there are any events that coincide with your travel dates, as this can enhance your holiday experience.
  3. Budget: Prices for flights and accommodation tend to be higher during peak travel times. If you’re on a tight budget, consider travelling during the shoulder season (late spring or early autumn) when prices are generally lower and destinations less crowded.

Where to Go on a Summer Holiday This Year

There’s no shortage of incredible destinations for your summer holiday. Here are some European and North African options that cater to a variety of interests and budgets:

1. The Algarve, Portugal

With its stunning coastline, charming towns, and delicious cuisine, the Algarve is a popular choice for a summer holiday. Soak up the sun on pristine beaches, explore the dramatic cliffs and caves, or indulge in some fresh seafood at a local restaurant.

2. Barcelona, Spain

A vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage, Barcelona offers the perfect blend of beach relaxation and urban exploration. Stroll down La Rambla, visit the awe-inspiring Sagrada Família, or unwind on the golden sands of Barceloneta Beach.

3. Santorini, Greece

This picturesque island in the Aegean Sea is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, whitewashed buildings, and crystal-clear waters. Ideal for a romantic getaway or a relaxing break, Santorini promises an unforgettable summer holiday experience.

4. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik’s stunning Old Town, with its medieval walls and historic charm, is a must-see for history buffs and Game of Thrones fans alike. The city also boasts beautiful beaches, making it an excellent choice for a summer holiday.

5. Rome, Italy

A city steeped in history, Rome offers a wealth of attractions, from the ancient Colosseum to the majestic Vatican City. Combine sightseeing with leisurely strolls through charming piazzas and indulging in delicious Italian cuisine for the ultimate summer holiday experience.

6. Morocco

For a taste of North African culture, consider a trip to Marrakech or Agadir in Morocco. You’ll find bustling souks, stunning architecture, and a rich culinary scene. While Marrakech is inland, Agadir is by the Atlantic coast and perfect for summer sun.

Nestled along the French Riviera, Nice offers a glamorous summer holiday experience. Stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, take a dip in the azure waters of the Mediterranean, or explore the city’s vibrant art scene.

8. Scandinavia

While you might not think of Scandinavia as summer holiday destinations, this can be one of the best times to visit Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. And yes, you could even go to the beach!

9. Israel and the Middle East

While the summer heat can be crazy in the Middle East, Israel sits on the Mediterranean making it perfect for a summer holiday. Other options in the region include Jordan and Egypt.

10. Bulgaria

If you’re looking for something a bit different this summer, Bulgaria can be a great place to enjoy sun and beach but with less of the cost. Head to beach resorts such as Varna and Burgas.

If you’re looking for cheap beach resort package deals, definitely take a look at On The Beach. We tend to find that On the Beach offers the most consistently good quality package deals, which is perfect when travelling with kids. They also include flights (although you can toggle that off if you prefer).

On the Beach also feature some less obvious destinations, including Bulgaria and the Middle East, so make sure to check them out if you’re looking for a deal

Getting Around on your Summer Holiday

While public transport in Europe is usually excellent, you might also want to explore further afield. Car hire is obviously the best way to get about with a bit more freedom, especially if you’re looking to avoid staying in one place.

RentalCars.com offers some of the best car rental prices, with loads of choice. You will also find that some countries such as Spain, Portugal and Greece, offer very affordable car rental for a week or more.

With so many fantastic destinations to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect summer holiday to suit your tastes and budget. Remember to book early, be flexible, and keep an eye out for special offers to ensure you get the best deal possible. Happy travels!
