The Best Beaches of St. Barth: Gouverneur Spotlight

Tucked away on the southern shore of St. Barth is one of the island’s loveliest gems: Gouverneur Beach. Completely remote save for a scattering of luxurious mansions perched in the forested hills above, the beach boasts heavenly white-sand shores, ideal snorkeling conditions, zero commercial clutter, and just the right touch of surrounding flora to make it feel worlds away from reality.

A short 20-minute car ride from Rosewood Le Guanahani St. Barth, Gouverneur Beach can be somewhat tricky to reach. Once you arrive and claim your spot alongside the crystal-clear turquoise waters however, the tranquility of the secluded cove takes over – all that’s left to do is relax.

How to Get to Gouverneur Beach

The drive to Gouverneur Beach involves navigating down a narrow, winding road from the neighboring Lurin. A bit technically challenging — remember to stay alert for approaching cars — the route offers one of the most stunning panoramas on all of St. Barth. Emerging from the tunnel of trees encompassing the road, you’ll be treated to a view of the sparkling, deep-turquoise bay below and, to the far left, a craggy cliff face, cascading down into the water.

One of the main draws of Gouverneur is that its remote location has kept it in impeccable condition. There are no commercial operations here (nor any facilities, so plan accordingly!), and typically has very few visitors at any given time. Park in the designated area adjacent to the beach entrance, set up your umbrella for the day, and soak up the peacefulness of having your own (practically) private cove for the day.

Things to Do at Gouverneur Beach

With its clear water, soft sand, natural sun protection from the sea grape trees, and sequestered location, Gouverneur is a haven for playing in the water and relaxing on the beach.

Spectacular snorkeling opportunities await along the eastern edge of the cove, where a rock outcropping creates a playground for local sea life. Because the beach is free of vendors of any kind, be sure to bring along your own gear in order to discover that delightful under-water world.

Without leaving the comfort of your towel, look out toward the sea to enjoy exquisite views of neighboring islands St. Kitts, Saba, and St. Eustatius.

And when you’re ready to cool off after sunbathing, take a dip in the striking blue water, warmed from the sun and sheltered from rough waves.

Beauty shines all around at Gouverneur Beach, from the towering peaks bookending either end of the stretch of soft sand and the backdrop of dense seagrass and lush Guaiacum trees to its diverse wildlife. Its unspoiled state makes it as close to paradise as a beach can get, every inch picture perfect.
