Sightseeing My Childhood Area

Sightseeing My Childhood Area

Sightseeing my childhood area is something to do while waiting for the next planned trip.

I thought since we are in Louisiana until September, why not visit some places nearby from my childhood.

A few weeks ago we took a ride along the River Road north of Port Allen, Louisiana.   This area between Port Allen and Rougon has expanded quite a bit in 50 years.

There are subdivisons with massive homes built in this area.   Back in the 60’s, there was nothing there but sugarcane fields.  It was very interesting to see how the West side of the Mississippi is growing.

Of course, there are still lots of sugarcane fields, but now there are soybean fields sprouting in areas.  Soybeans are becoming a big production in these parts.

Along the River Road

After riding for about an hour, we spotted an old graveyard.   We have an interested in these sites which started when we were in Mexico.    Have you even look off the highways into an open fields and see a large area of trees in the middle of the field.  If so, there’s a possibility this area is an old graveyard site. There is a group formed in West Baton Rouge that actually is trying to preserve these sites.

One project we are planning is to take pictures of these old graves.  We started with a few sites from Mexico and Mississippi.  Once we get a few more sites, I will post a blog and pictures.   Another project is to return to take pictures of the Plantations located in the area.

This week, we drove along the River Road on the East side of the Mississippi.   Again, we drove about an hour South of Baton Rouge on the road.

More plantations are located close to Gramercy, Louisiana.   The tour to most are very reasonable and are always interesting to listen to the history.   Another project is to include these sites and tours.

We have also driven South on the West Side of the River to include Nottoway Plantation.

Large bridges crossing the Mississippi make for great photos of the structures.   Again more pictures will be included in another blog on these .

It’s actually relaxing taking this drive.  The levee is the barrier keeping the River from overflowing into the area.  I noticed that it’s height varies depending on the way the River ran on the other side.

I guess the drives taken are just a glimpse of what is to come before we dash off to Europe in the fall.

Now that you have some idea of future blogs, stay tune.

Don’t forget to check out the ads.   Some other sites of interest to visit —

my husband’s blog –http://www.peaceloveandbeaches.com

my grandson’s site –  https://www.facebook.com/SethsCutco/

Have a great day — keep smiling when everyone else is falling apart.

Dianne
