Top 5 Things to Know About Holi Festival While Visiting India

Holi is the most colorful Festival of India. A lot of people plan their trip to India especially to witness this festival. And they have ample reasons to do so. This festival offers them this unique opportunity to throw lovely colors on each other. You can even splash colored water on one another with multi hued water guns. The spectacle is truly lovely. People who are keen on bit of adventure must try Bhang Lasi which is an intoxicating drink. Holi take place on the day after the full moon in March. Special Holi events happen in different parts of the country. You have parties with music, colors and rain dance in metros.

There are few things which you should know while playing Holi festival in India.

1. Avoid playing Holi on the streets

Play holi with your friends and family. Do not go out on the street to play with locals as this can turn nasty and dangerous. You never know if someone gets offended and a fight breaks out. Also many people do not like water and color being thrown on them. Choose a safe venue for playing Holi where the crowd is not expected to go out of control. Holi is taken as an excuse by men to grope women on streets. So, it is better to be safe than sorry.

2. Smear oil on your body and wear clothes which you can throw away

Colors can lead to an allergic reaction on your skin. So it is prudent to cover your body with a layer of mustard oil or coconut oil. This prevents direct contact of color with your skin. Also, the color comes off your body without any problem as it does not get absorbed. The clothes which you wear on Holi get badly spoilt, so it is advisable that you wear clothes which you want to discard away. Wearing new clothes on Holi is not recommended as you never know when someone splashes color or water on you.

3. Do not go overboard with Bhang Lasi

Bhang Lasi can have an adverse effect on you, so do not have it in huge quantity. Just try it for taste as it is a powerful intoxicant which is presented to you in way of delicious drink. Also anyone can take advantage of you when you are in an intoxicated state. Bhang Lasi is made out out of cannabis plant and it attacks central nervous system. This is the reason why people on streets misbehave because they are in highly intoxicated.

4. North India Celebrates better holi

If you want to enjoy true flavor of Holi, plan a trip to Northern part of India as this festival is celebrated with greater vigor and energy here. In Vrindavan/ Mathura Holi is played with rose petals and Gulal ‘pink color’. The sight is just fabulous. Equally popular is Holi of Udaipur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer.

5. Significance of Holi

There are various reasons behind celebration of Holi. This festival marks triumph of good over evil. The demoness Holika was burnt to ashes on this day. On Holi eve huge bonfires are lit and people dance as well as sing around fire. This is referred to as Holika Dahan. Then this festival also marks onset on auspicious spring harvest season.
