Juan de Vivero gets the credit for establishing Manila Cathedral—it is actually the first cathedral of the Philippines. In 1981, Pope John Paul II made Manila Cathedral a basilica, giving it the premium status it now has. The cathedral currently has eight chapels.
Masses are conducted during the week and at the weekend. Sunday has up to five services from 7 am, each lasting for one and a half hours. The fifth service is in the evening at 6 pm. From Monday to Friday, there are two masses a day, 7:30 am and 12:10 pm. Every Saturday, there is a mass at 7:30 am.
For those who want a tour, you can request one on their website. Manila Cathedral is full of events, therefore, tours of this sanctuary at certain times might not be possible—weddings at the cathedral are usually popular.
