The enchanting capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana is the best introduction to the country you can have. If you want to capture the pure essence of Slovenia, you must spend at least a day in Ljubljana.

For an unforgettable day in Ljubljana – start your day with a stroll through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Prešeren Square, marvel at the architectural marvels like the Triple Bridge and Plečnik House, take in the city’s panorama from Ljubljana Castle, savor the traditional Slovenian dishes at one of the cafes by the Ljubljanica River, cruise along the river, retreat to lush Tivoli Park, and end your day with a refined performance at the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre.

For an alternative experience, you can plan a visit to the center of alternative art, Metelkova Mesto.

For those who want to spend more time, there’s no dearth of things to do in Ljubljana. In fact, the city serves as the perfect base for exploring the other famous destinations not only in Slovenia but in neighboring countries like Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary.

2. Take in the Picture-Perfect Beauty of Lake Bled, Slovenia’s Poster Child

Located at the base of the Julian Alps along the glacial Lake Bled adorned with a tiny island housing the iconic baroque church, the resort town of Bled is, unarguably, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Slovenia.

There’s a reason Slovenia showcases the picture of Lake Bled to attract tourists from around the world. Its endless beauty and charm make it the best of all the Slovenia attractions. Your itinerary for Slovenia is incomplete without Lake Bled on it!

Ride a traditional Pletna boat to the picturesque, ring the wishing bell (legend has it that if you ring the bell three times and make a wish, it’ll come true), and spend some time sitting at one of the wooden benches in its courtyard enjoying the tranquility that surrounds you.

For the more adventurous, hike up to Bled Castle or Mala Osojnica to savor iconic views of the lake and the surrounding peaks. There are quite a few viewpoints in Bled, each showcasing the lake from diverse angles and perspectives.

3. Follow the Beautiful Trail at Vintgar Gorge

Just 2.8 miles (4.6 km) outside Bled, Vintgar Gorge is nature’s masterpiece – a must-see in Slovenia!

The gorge’s untouched wilderness stands as an awe-inspiring testament to the raw beauty of nature. Carved by Radovna River, it’s a mile (1.6 km) long gorge located in Triglav National Park.

As you venture into the gorge, the sight of the rushing Radovna River, its crystal-clear waters cutting through the sheer rock walls over millennia mesmerizes you.

Wooden walkways (aka Žumer Galleries after its originator) and bridges lead you through the heart of the gorge, allowing you to marvel at the stunning waterfalls, lush vegetation, and enchanting pools along the way.

The emerald hues of the water create a hypnotic contrast against the towering cliffs, making every step a visual delight.

Whether you’re an avid hiker seeking a scenic escape or a photographer looking for a picture that speaks a thousand words or a nature enthusiast that finds solace in the great outdoors or just a traveler in search of a serene sanctuary, Vintgar Gorge promises an unparalleled experience and an unforgettable adventure.

Exploring Predjama Castle is one of the top historical experiences in Slovenia, as it has over 800 years’ worth of history.

Predjama Castle is incredibly unique as it was built into a 123m high cliff and has a large cave system connected to it. In fact, Predjama Castle is known as the largest cave castle in the world.

Today, the castle is reminiscent of its medieval past, and you can visit a series of unique rooms inside the castle walls, such as the medieval courtroom, a small chapel, an armory, a dungeon, and more.

One of the most interesting rooms is a bridge that leads into a large cave entrance. You can visit the castle on a guided tour or opt to visit on your own and take the audio tour which will tell you the fascinating stories behind Predjama Castle. It is well worth it to explore the inside of Predjama Castle.

Predjama Castle is located only an hour’s drive from Ljubljana, making it a perfect day trip option. It is also near the famous Postojna Caves, which is another top attraction in Slovenia.

The castle is open year-round, and tickets are €18.50 for just the castle or you can do a combined option with the Postojna Caves for €41.50.

5. Drive the Vršič Pass, a Thrilling Alpine Adventure

A drive along the legendary Vršič Pass in Slovenia is an exhilarating journey through the heart of the Julian Alps. This iconic mountain road, famed as one of the most scenic drives in Europe, lets you explore the alpine wonders of Triglav National Park.

Starting in Kranjska Gora and ending near the town of Trenta, you ascend about 50 hairpin bends and each turn reveals awe-inspiring vistas of snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls.

The ever-changing landscape captivates travelers, providing countless opportunities to stop and capture picture-perfect photographs.

At the summit, an elevation of 1,611 meters (5,300 feet) rewards you with panoramic views that seem straight out of a fairytale. Take a moment to breathe in the crisp alpine air and embrace the serenity of the surroundings.

Driving the Vršič Pass is not just a scenic road trip, but an intriguing historic experience as well. All through the drive, you’ll encounter remnants of World War I, as the pass once served as a vital military route. Today, it serves as a testament to the region’s historical significance.

For hiking enthusiasts, the pass serves as a starting point for various hikes, Slemenova Špica being the best!

6. Spend a Day at Beautiful Lake Bohinj

Visiting Lake Bohinj in Slovenia is a must-do! Located in Triglav National Park in the midst of the majestic Julian Alps, the alpine lake is a relaxing place to visit from Ljubljana or Bled. You can arrive by bus, or drive here if you have a car.

Lake Bohinj is quite large, with lots of activities. If you visit during the warmer months of the year, walk the trail part way or all the way around the lake. It’s about a 12 km walk if you do the full circuit, and will take you about 3-5 hours, depending on how fast you walk and how many stops you make.

There’s also a tourist boat that takes you from one end of the lake to the other, great for snapping photos of the scenery along the shore. If you prefer to be more active, go canoeing, sailing, or stand-up paddleboarding on the lake. Rentals are available in the small communities on the shore.

At the western end of the lake, you can hike to Slap Savica, a lovely waterfall, or take the cable car to the top of Mount Vogel for panoramic views over the lake.

For a dose of culture, visit the small church of St. John the Baptist in Ribcev Laz, on the eastern shore of the lake.

7. Hike Kozjak Waterfall

Stephanie from The Unknown Enthusiast

Visiting the Kozjak Waterfall is a spectacular thing to do in Slovenia – the waterfall is beautiful and the trail has a lot of interesting and pretty things to see along the way. Located in Triglav National Park in the northwest part of the country, the hike to Slap Kozjak is just over 2 miles (3.5 km) round trip.

The first part of the hike runs right along the gorgeous Soča River, and there’s a bridge and platform that give incredible views over the river and mountains. Near these viewpoints, you can also take a side trail to observe some old bunkers and tunnels that were created and used during World War I.

You’ll leave the Soča River and start following the Kozjak Stream (which feeds into the Soča) until canyon walls start rising up around you. The walls suddenly become very high, and the stream fills the path, so you climb the stone stairs up to a wooden boardwalk bolted into the cliffside.

This boardwalk takes you farther back into the magical-looking canyon and into a little cove where the Kozjak waterfall streams down into a pool of green water. The combination of charming pathways, turquoise water, and tall, curving cliff walls creates the most enchanting atmosphere.

8. Explore the Underground Marvels of Postojna Caves

Venturing into the captivating Postojna Cave, one of the most extensive cave systems in Europe is like discovering a whole new world beneath the surface.

Exploring this subterranean wonderland is a unique journey into a realm of jaw-dropping formations, vast underground chambers, and an ancient world hidden from sight for millennia!

Winding through the labyrinthine tunnels, a miniature electric train ride through the mysterious chambers lets you marvel at the stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and cascading curtains of limestones, sculpted by nature over millions of years.

Don’t miss the chance to spot the enigmatic “human fish” or olm, an ancient cave-dwelling amphibian that calls these caves home.

The Postojna Caves are also home to one of the largest cave-dwelling colonies of bats in Europe. These fascinating creatures take flight as twilight falls, creating a captivating spectacle as they swoop through the cave’s vast spaces.

After your underground expedition, bask in the charm of Postojna, a quaint town that has been welcoming curious travelers for centuries. Explore the historic streets, savor local delicacies, and immerse yourself in the region’s rich cultural heritage.

The best place to stay in Ljubljana is, without a doubt, Hostel Celica.

Hostel Celica is a popular hostel housed in a former military prison. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers, and the setting is truly unique. Each cell has been creatively transformed into a comfortable and artfully designed guest room.

Both dorm rooms and private rooms are on offer and are a perfect blend of history mixed with contemporary culture. Furthermore, the hostel also features communal areas, an on-site art gallery, and a lively bar perfect for meeting other travelers.

Next to the hostel is another fabulous must-see site in Ljubljana, Metelkova Mesto.

© Annelies

Metelkova Mesto is an alternative cultural hub located in a former military complex. It emerged in the early 1990s when a group of artists and activists occupied the complex and transformed it into a vibrant and autonomous community space.

At present, it is a self-governing art district that features colorful graffiti-covered buildings, underground clubs, galleries, and live music venues. It stands as a symbol of artistic expression, diversity, and activism in Ljubljana and was even declared a national cultural heritage site in 2005.

There is no English program to be found online for the concerts and exhibitions at Metelkova so it’s best to ask about it at the reception on arrival in Hostel Celica.

12. Discover the Untouched Beauty of Krupa River Spring in Bela Krajina

Roshni from The Wanderlust Within

Slovenia unique experiences – Bela Krajina © Roshni

One of the best off-the-beaten-track places to visit in Slovenia has to be Bela Krajina, located in the South East of the country near the border of Croatia.

The region is known amongst locals for its lush green countryside, vineyards, and sparkling turquoise rivers, especially the beautiful (but unknown to tourists) Krupa River Spring.

The Krupa River spring can be reached from the capital, Ljubljana, within a one-hour drive or two and a half hours by train to Metlika if you prefer slow (and cheap, 8 EUR one way) travel.

Summer is a great time to visit, especially if you want to have a break from the crowds that flock to Lake Bled, in fact, you’ll likely have the area to yourself (even in the mid-afternoon when you’d expect a place as beautiful as this to be busy).

Once here, take in the scenery, bring a book, go for a hike, marvel at the emerald-green waters, or keep your eyes out for the cute pond turtles that live in the springs!

As this area is a hidden gem, there are few places to stay but if glamping is your thing make sure you experience Big Berry Resort, located on the Kolpa River. They have private hot tubs, daily yoga and Watersport activities as well as trips to other unknown spots in the Bela Krajina region.

13. Visit Slovenia’s Oldest Winery in Ptuj

Ptuj is an inconspicuous city, away from the better-known tourist hubs in Slovenia. Located in the eastern provinces, Ptuj has been around for over 2000 years.

Known as the oldest city in Slovenia, it was originally established as a strategic Roman base along the Drava River. The area is sitting in a suitable area for wine production and the Romans already knew that back then.

Today the Štajerska Slovenija wine district and Haloze Hills near Ptuj are upcoming wine terroir in Europe. The oldest winery in Slovenia can be found tucked away in the old town of Ptuj.

Join a guided tour in the Ptujska Klet, and the knowledgeable owner himself will host you.

Learn more about wine in general and taste local grape varieties such as Furmint and Riesling. Discover the age-old cellars and massive wine barrels. The experience is also reasonably priced, and wine tours start at €14 per adult.

Because the city is tied to its wine culture, you will also be able to learn more about the history of the city during your wine tour in Ptuj, making this an all-over-perfect experience. I encourage you to explore all the historical landmarks and attractions in Ptuj to make the most of your trip.

14. Visit Slovenia’s Hidden Gem of Kranj

Cuddled in the Slovenian Alps, Kranj emerges as a hidden gem waiting to be unveiled by intrepid travelers.

Stepping into this charming town is like stepping into a fairytale; its medieval heritage blends seamlessly with a vibrant cultural scene, making it a must-visit destination in Slovenia.

Start your exploration in the heart of the Old Town, where cobblestone streets lead you through a tapestry of colorful buildings and historic landmarks. Climb the steps to St. Cantianius’ Church, perched atop a hill, and be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains.

Kranj’s artistic soul shines through in its numerous galleries and museums, showcasing the works of local and international talents. Stroll along the Khislstein Castle, which houses the Prešeren Gallery, named after Slovenia’s most celebrated poet, France Prešeren. Immerse yourself in the town’s creative energy at Layer House, a vibrant hub for art, music, and cultural events.

For a taste of authentic Slovenian cuisine, indulge in the delectable offerings at the bustling Kokra Restaurant. Savor traditional dishes such as Carniolan sausage and potica, all paired with locally produced wines.

But Kranj’s allure goes beyond its historic charm. Nature enthusiasts will be delighted by the nearby Kokra River, perfect for a peaceful stroll along its banks. The Kokra Canyon offers opportunities for thrilling adventures like canyoning and rock climbing.

As the day draws to a close, unwind by Lake Zbilje, a serene spot where the idyllic reflections of the surrounding hills create a picture-perfect scene.

Kranj may be hidden, but its allure is unmistakable. For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, this enchanting town invites you to uncover its secrets, connect with its heritage, and embrace the authentic spirit of Slovenia.

15. Stay at Rustic Farmhouse

Angie Kunze from We’re Not in Kansas Anymore

One of the very best things to do in Slovenia is a relaxing stay at Klavze 28, a dreamy rustic farmhouse bed and breakfast in the Soča Valley.

Klavze 28 is located down a winding country road and is surrounded by green meadows and rolling hills. Rooms in the restored farmhouse have cozy old-world details like rock walls, woven rugs, pretty flowers picked from the meadows outside, and clawfoot tubs.

Spend your days exploring the stunning property with a riverside swim beach or relaxing in one of several outdoor spaces.

Evenings are spent around a cozy bonfire, and there is always a stock of local wines on offer any time of the day or night. Breakfast at Klavze is truly special.

Enjoy locally sourced farm-to-table products like local cheeses, butter, jams, cured meats, and freshly baked bread, all artfully prepared.

On mornings when the weather is pleasant, breakfast is served outdoors with second-to-none views! Incredibly, it is possible to get to this hidden paradise by rail!

There is a train station just 1500 feet from the property! For this reason, Klavze is an easy train ride from major Slovenian towns like Bled and Ljubljana. Area attractions include horseback riding and various activities on the Soča River.

Best Things to do in Slovenia for Foodies

16. Join a Food Walk in Ljubljana

Shweta from Zest in a Tote

Ljubljana is a pretty town with colorful buildings, interesting street art, and an unhurried pace. We only had a day here as a detour from our 2-week Croatia and Slovenia itinerary.

And what better than to do a Ljubljana food walk tour that not only introduced us to traditional and modern Slovenian cuisine but also gave us lots of information about the history and culture of this country?

Slovenian food is heavily influenced by different cuisines, namely German, Austrian, and Hungarian flavors. We started our food tour with some traditional dishes from Slovenia.

We went to small eateries chosen by our guide and tried traditional cabbage stew, dumplings with different fillings (named Strukli), and different types of Potica (a traditional holiday pastry of Slovenia). In most places, there were vegetarian and vegan options as well.

There was also a meal of modern Slovenian cuisine paired with wine from Slovenia, which was an eye-opener for us.

I hadn’t really associated Slovenia with wine-making. Coffee and ice cream (in flavors like elderflower, cheese, and tarragon!) finished this lovely 4-hour food tour.

I highly recommend this food tour from Ljubljananjam to all those visiting Ljubljana!

17. Savor the Prekmurje Layer Cake

Sandra from Blue Marble Vagabonds

When planning a trip to Slovenia, many travelers incorporate culinary experiences into their itinerary to immerse themselves in the local food scene.

While the famous Bled cream cake is absolutely yummy and well worth a taste, Slovenian cuisine harbors a lesser-known but equally delicious sweet treat that could surely contest for the title of THE BEST Slovenian dessert.

The Prekmurje Region, the northeasternmost part of Slovenia, hosts a culinary gem known as “Prekmurska gibanica,” or the Prekmurje layer cake.

This traditional Slovenian dessert consists of ten layers, made with shortcrust pastry and four different fillings: walnuts, poppy seeds, cottage cheese, and apples. Although this layered pastry is FAR from light, its rich spectrum of flavors makes every bite taste like heaven.

Don’t fret about the calories, though! There are so many things to do in the Prekmurje region —from touring enchanting medieval castles to cycling across the picturesque countryside and unwinding in thermal waters—that you’ll burn those extra calories before you know it.

You can try the Prekmurje layer cake at any restaurant in the region; however, arguably the best one can be found in Moravske Toplice. Remember to grab an extra piece to enjoy on the go – it’s a must!

18. Taste the Bled Cream Cake

As you arrive at the enchanting shores of Lake Bled, a culinary delight awaits – the world-famous Bled Cream Cake, locally known as “kremšnita.” This delectable treat has become an integral part of the Slovenian identity, and there’s no better place to indulge in its creamy goodness than against the backdrop of this picturesque Alpine lake.

The Bled Cream Cake is a masterpiece of culinary art, featuring layers of light and fluffy vanilla cream sandwiched between delicate sheets of golden puff pastry. Its history dates back to the 1950s when it was first crafted by the chefs at Bled’s Park Hotel. Today, it has become a symbol of both Bled and Slovenia, adored by locals and visitors alike.

As you take your first bite, you’ll be greeted by a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The velvety smoothness of the cream melts in your mouth, while the crispy pastry adds a delightful crunch. The cake’s sweetness is just right, never overwhelming, allowing the natural flavors to shine through.

To enhance the experience, savor your Bled Cream Cake al fresco, sitting on the lakeside terrace of the Park Café or the renowned Hotel Park, where it was first created. With every bite, you’ll feel the gentle breeze caressing your face, and your eyes will be drawn to the iconic Bled Island with its charming Church of the Assumption, seemingly floating in the middle of the lake.

The culinary journey doesn’t end with just one slice – immerse yourself in the local culture by learning the secrets of crafting the perfect kremšnita. Join a cooking class or a pastry workshop, where skilled bakers will guide you through the process, from rolling out the pastry to whipping up the velvety cream. The experience will deepen your appreciation for this timeless dessert and the craftsmanship behind it.

Savoring a Bled Cream Cake in Lake Bled is more than just a culinary experience; it’s an indulgence in the very essence of Slovenia’s heartwarming hospitality and rich cultural heritage. So, as you bask in the beauty of Lake Bled, let this delightful treat become a cherished memory of your time in this magical corner of the world.

Slovenia Experiences for Adventure-Seekers

19. Climbing Mala Mojstrovka Via Ferrata

Natali from She’s Abroad Again

© Natali

Mala Mojstrovka is one of many impressive peaks situated in the Julian Alps of Slovenia. You can reach this 2332-meter tall peak from several routes, but for an unforgettable experience, climb to it through its famed Via Ferrata route.

The route, while challenging, is superbly maintained and well-marked, offering a blend of steep ascents, rocky pathways, and steel cables to aid your climb.

You might see some hikers free-climbing the trail, but it is very dangerous and not recommended at all, so make sure you have your Ferrata set securely fastened as you brave the cliffs.

The trip takes about 4-6 hours, depending on how comfortable you are with heights. As you reach the peak, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Julian Alps, which makes the whole journey well worth it!

The descent is much easier, as you’ll follow a regular hiking trail. It’s amazing to observe how the panorama changes on your way down, as the high peaks give way to the valleys.

Mala Mojstrovka is located in the north of Slovenia, close to the border with Italy and Austria. It s conveniently situated, so you can do this hike on a day trip from neighboring countries, even as a day trip from Pula if you get bored of the sea!

20. Kayak the Soča River

Karen Warren from Outdoor Adventure Sampler

The emerald-green Soča River is often considered the most beautiful river in Europe. A kayaking trip on the Soča is the best way to experience the incredible mountain scenery and thrilling whitewater.

Most kayaking and rafting trips on the Soča River start in Bovec in the Soča Valley. For adventurous kayakers, the canyons with continuous whitewater beckon. Many world-class kayakers travel from a distance to seek out the rapids of the Soča River.

For most visitors, a paddling trip on a milder whitewater stretch is in order. For beginning kayakers, outfitters have inflatable sit-upon kayaks that are stable and easy to paddle. They provide helmets, wetsuits, booties, splash jackets, and life jackets for safety and comfort.

After a shuttle to the river put-in, the trip starts with paddling instruction and orientation to the river. Soon you are bouncing along the waves with magnificent mountains in the background.

The amazing scenery leaves little doubt as to why the Soča River was a filming location for the movie “Chronicles of Narnia”. At times, you will share the river with fly fishing enthusiasts casting for the indigenous Soča trout.

The kayaking trips on the Soča River last about 3 hours. You will have many stories to tell about your exciting time paddling this emerald river of Slovenia.
