Stephanie Craig of History Fan Girl

Trang An displays one of the most stunning karst sceneries in the world.

Located in the Ninh Binh province, Trang An has earned the nickname “Ha Long Bay on land” due to its gigantic limestone karst peaks that tower over the submerged valleys of the Red River delta.

While it’s as beautiful as Ha Long Bay, it receives a fraction of the tourists due to its more rural location. Like Ha Long Bay, Trang An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated as such in 2014.

The most popular thing to do in Trang An is to take a boat tour in the Trang An grottos. Here you can see temples rising out of the water, take your boat through underwater caves, and explore forgotten Hollywood movie sets.

Across from the entrance of the grotto, there is a place to get lunch as well as shop for a few Vietnamese souvenirs.

Karla from Colorful Journeys

Con Dao Island, located off the coast of Vietnam, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

With its secluded beaches, lush jungles, and rich cultural heritage, Con Dao is sure to take your breath away.

Additionally, Con Dao is known for its history as a former prison island, adding a unique layer of depth to your visit.

There are numerous activities available on the island, such as relaxing on the beaches, island hopping, and scuba diving.

The Con Dao Prison Museum, which offers an insightful look into one of Vietnam’s darkest eras, is also a must-see. Here you will find the cell blocks where prisoners were kept, including the famous tiger cages.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can buy fresh seafood at the local market and cook it in your accommodation’s kitchen. Otherwise, enjoy a delicious seafood meal at one of the many restaurants in the main center.

When to go: The best time to visit Con Dao is between February and September when the weather is milder and the skies are clearer.

Getting there: You can take a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City or a ferry from Vung Tau to get to the island.

Stay: There are plenty of great places to stay in the center, close to the restaurants and the beach. Homestay De la Rosa is a cabin-style accommodation perfect for those who want to enjoy a peaceful and quiet environment while still being close to the center.
