My heart lies there

San Francisco
California
28 Apr 2010

As I write, it’s April in Canberra. The days are getting shorter, the morning fog chills the air, and my thoughts turn outwards, as they generally do at this time of year.

I’m wearing a Cheap red fleece this morning. I bought it in 2009 at Fishermans Wharf, just before hiring bikes and riding over the Golden Gate Bridge with a merry companion on a sparkling day.

It’s lasted nine years, pretty good for a cheap piece of Chinese fluff, but my memories of San Francisco will last forever.

Such an amazing place, full of stupendous views: the rolling green hills of Marin, the bustle of the ships and ferries passing Alcatraz, the sight of a cable car climbing halfway to the stars, the two great bridges, the sea lions, the gulls, the wild parrots, the murals at Coit Tower and the fabulous views from the top.

The houses stacked like steps beside streets that seem almost vertical – especially when it rains. The glittering headquarters of tech firms. The placid dome of the Palace of Fine Arts beside its lagoon. The cheerful atmosphere of the Marina Safeway, the best supermarket in the universe. The Produce Market at the Ferry Building: a sublime array of fresh, tasty, cheap and convenient food.

The museums and galleries – oh, I could happily spend weeks exploring the place, drinking in the atmosphere. But I’ve only got a few days to list the best bits. Bear with me!

Pete
