Fitness: Training for the Dragon Dash Race

Here is an old post about how we started training and ended up winning the first ever Fitness Race in Vietnam, the Dragon Dash. Looking back now and remembering how hard it was and how much work we put in, makes it well worth it.

Since I have stopped playing Football in Australia, I have been struggling with motivation to keep Training hard and remaining in the best shape possible. I love my social cricket and footy, but they do not have the same demands and I find it hard to justify going to the gym.

I am constantly looking for challenges. Great Wall marathon, Triathlons, Rugby and Cricket. But I have found something here in Saigon that will push me and give me reason to stay in tip top shape.

Spartan Races, Obstacle courses, Ninja Warrior and Wipeout have led the new revolution in fun Fitness and is spreading world wide. So when I found out that Saigon was hosting it’s very first “Dragon Dash”, I knew I had to be a part of it.

I signed up online early as I know spots would fill up quickly. Upon registering, I saw that they had a team option. And knew that’s what I had to do. So I put the word out. My criteria for teammates: Tough, Fit, Strong and wanting to win. Unfortunately I ended up with Tom, Cian and Ben.

This fine group of gentlemen will be assisting each other as we climb over walls, army crawl through mud and scaling ropes. This will also be the first time that any of us have ever done an adventure race of this kind. We have all made verbal agreements to go easy on the beers, and start the training regime.

Somewhere deep down inside of each of us is a winner. So we made a goal, lets try to win the team event. Train hard, put in the hours, get specific with training and lets see how far we can go. Who knows, with a little bit of luck maybe we can be semi-successful.

So it began, time to get down and train hard.

Cian is not the one we are worried about. He trains and competes in triathlons out of boredom and swims daily. He is the fittest by a very long way, so it is the rest of us who are playing catch up.

Tom, Ben and I all work together, so we have more opportunity to train simultaneously and hence push ourselves to catch up to Cian.

Ok, I will update you next week when we really get into the training.

We all like to perform, so we will all be working hard to get the results we want.
