Dolce Far Niente – What does that mean? The best way I can translate this Italian concept is: The Sweetness of Doing Nothing.
We did’t plan anything for this Sunday other than packing the radio and a cooler full of water and beer. A strange concept for most people these days with life being the way it is. We are constantly worrying about how we are going to pay the next bill or how much we need to save to buy the next expensive thing but sometimes, in order to put it all into prospective, you have to put some distance between you and your life and simply fare niente.
I’m from a large Italian family and grew up so Italian that one would think this concept would be a very familiar to me. All too quickly I ran as fast as I could away from the tomatoes and herbs growing in my mother’s garden and fell right into the ditch of this American Dream we all chase. I forgot the sweetness and importance of just slowing down and admiring life in its simplicity.
We always have to do something. We can’t just sit still and take it all in. That phone has to come out of our pockets and instead of absorbing that beautiful sunset we are too busy watching it through our phones to record a video that we will never go back to watch. We take advance of life as it happens and it just passes right on by.
But this day, we just sat and stared as the sun reflected off the water and the wind blew gently across our faces. We just inhaled it all in. The beer never tasted better, our conversations were never sweeter and our body’s never felt so rested.
