A historic narrow-gauge railway line, the Kalka-Shimla Railway Line stretches 96 km through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the area. The railway line is part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage Site. Without a trip to Lakkar Bazaar, Shimla is not the same. Previously, Lakkar Bazaar, a market area that shares the Ridge with Shimla, was a little village unto itself. It is the well-known centre of Shimla’s wooden crafts bazaar which gets its name from the Hindi word “Lakri,” which means wood. Indian Institute of Advanced Study

Located in Shimla, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) is a research institute. About 3 Km away from the Mall Road, it was established in 1964 by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India. Originally known as the Viceregal Lodge, the structure now housing the institute was constructed as a residence for Lord Dufferin, the Viceroy of India from 1884 to 1888. 

All of India’s viceroys and governor generals after that lived here. The structure has an Indo-Gothic architectural style. The house hosted numerous critical decisions made during the Indian independence movement. This was the location of the 1945 Simla Conference. It was also decided here in 1947 to separate Pakistan and East Pakistan from India.

Summer Hill

On the Shimla-Kalka railway line, Summer Hill is a charming location with breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas. This beautiful township is close to Shimla and offers peaceful surroundings and picturesque views of the surrounding hills. Summer Hill is the exact location where Mahatma Gandhi stayed at Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur’s exquisite Georgian house during his tour. In the winter, the site appears to be completely covered in snow, and in the summer, it is very comfortable. 

Encompassing the gorgeous setting of Summer Hill is the Himachal University.

Jakhu Hill

The Jakhu Temple, devoted to Lord Hanuman, is located atop Jakhu Hill, Shimla’s highest peak. You may see the top of the 33-meter-tall statue of the deity smiling back at you if you look up over the treeline close to the Christ Church. According to legend, Lord Hanuman rested here while en route to locate Lord Lakshmana’s sanjeevani root. Due to its distance from the town and all of its activity, the temple has managed to hold onto its old-world beauty. One can take a quick cable car journey to the summit of the mountain to get to the temple. The other choice is to begin the strenuous but picturesque climb that ascends the lovely slope next.
