Kefalonia is an island in the Greek archipelago, often counted as the largest of the Ionian islands. Holidays to Kefalonia – Best Time To Visit

In August the searing temperatures are unbearable and there’s little point in coming here, even with the lure of cheap accommodations. But wait a few weeks and your patience is rewarded as the temperatures fall down to a comfortable a range in 20 degrees centigrade. If you put off your holiday till October, then you can witness the largest festival on the island, the second feast of St Gerasimos, Kefalonia’s patron saint, during which time there’s a parade through the streets and the entire island falls into the festival spirit.

Holidays to Kefalonia – Melissani Lake

The capital Argostoli is close to the most beautiful stretch in all of Kefalonia, the Myrtos beach. It has dazzling white sands and unbelievable turquoise waters and is said to be one of the most photographed strips of sand in all of the world. Make a trip to the famous monastery of St. Gerasimo and the Robola winery located next to it.

Melissani Lake is an enchanting area, as it is an underground lake that is filled entirely by subterranean currents. The roof of the cave where it is located has caved, so that sunlight pours in and it’s much less spooky than it would have been otherwise in the complete dark. You also get to enjoy a free light show as a result of this, as the sunshine plays on the water to create the effect of dancing lights. If you’re visiting here as part of a tour you will likely be accompanied by a guide who will also take you on a boat tour through the lake to show you the weird limestone formations in the cave around the lake.

Also make sure to visit the unique and surprising Drogarati cave in Kefalonia, which was opened to the public only in the 1960s and is famous for its acoustics. Concerts were held here regularly and even now orchestras often give some performances here regularly, which you might want to look into for dates and timings.
