I honestly can’t remember how I found Pioneer Farms in Austin, but I knew immediately I wanted to take the kids and husband! We love old stuff and history.
What to Expect at Pioneer Farms
Expect to see individuals dressed in period clothing performing period related tasks, from the blacksmith to the lady of the house making dinner. While they are called re-enactors, I don’t feel the word “actor” should be placed anywhere in their title. It is very easy to see the amount of work they have put into their “character”. You really do feel like you were transported back in time!
There are six themed areas on the grounds:
- 1841 Tonkawa Encampment
- 1853 Walnut Creek Greenbelt
- 1868 German Emigrant Farm
- 1873 Texian Farm
- 1887 Cotton Planter’s Farm
- 1899 Sprinkle Corner rural village.
Things to Know
You can take lessons at the Blacksmith Shop, Wood Shop, and Archery Range. See their website for a schedule and cost.
There is a nature trail. In addition to walking the grounds, there is also a short and easy nature trail along the backside of the grounds. Make sure to take time out to walk it as this is where a couple of more hidden gems are located.
No Smoking. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the grounds.
Pets are not allowed. Keep pets at home as they will not be allowed to enter.
Keep modern technology in the car. It is ok to bring a phone to take pictures but to keep with the whole “stepping back in history” theme, refrain from phone calls and other modern technology while on the grounds.
It is Self-Guided. The tour is self-guided at your own pace. You pay your admission fee at the general store.
No Resturant. They do sell some snacks and drinks in the general store.

Hours: Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last admission daily at 4 p.m.
Cost: $8 for visitors ages 13 and over, and $6 for children ages 3-12. Children 2 and under are free. Groups of 20 or more is $5 each.
