Drury Inn & Suites Riverwalk | San Antonio Hotel Review

Building History

The hotel is located in the historic City Public Service Building (also known as the Petroleum Commerce Building), which was built in 1921. It originally housed the offices of the San Antonio Public Service Company, which provided commercial and residential gas and electric services.

The City Public Service Building was the first commercial office building in downtown San Antonio to face the river while all others treated the river as a side or back elevation.

Also significant is the site in which the building sits upon. This site is where the original site of the Twohig House (one of San Antonio’s original settlers) sat. Due to its location and architectural design, the City Public Service Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1998, Drury Hotels acquired the building and restored the exterior to its original 1920s appearance. They also added a rooftop pool and observation deck which overlooks the San Antonio River and River Walk.

Why We Love It

Other than the historical building, another thing that caught our eye was the free hot breakfast and free kickback service which includes free food and 3 free alcoholic beverages between 5:30 pm and 7 pm nightly. The 3 free alcoholic beverages are per person/per night.

Do you know how rare it is to find free breakfast included within your stay down at the River Walk much less free alcoholic beverages and food (which you could make into a dinner)!? It saves you a lot when it comes to how much you could spend on food without this amenity!

For those that do not drink alcohol, they also have soda’s & tea which are available 24 hours a day.

The Rooms

We opted for a suite since we have 2 teens. The suites are not much more than regular rooms and prices are VERY reasonable and are actually cheaper than a lot of the surrounding hotels.

The suite was very spacious and had a MASSIVE balcony.

The bedroom was HUGE, and honestly, there was a lot of wasted space in the bedroom that could have been used for the bathroom which is cramped (that really is the only negative feature of the hotel that we didn’t like).

Our Dislikes

We don’t have many dislikes, but there could be some improvements.

The bathrooms are cramped – At least in the suite were in. It was severely cramped and the bathroom could have been made bigger by using some of the wasted space within the bedroom. I wish I would have taken a picture! It was very poor design!

Not enough seating for breakfast or Kickback – It doesn’t matter what time you arrive, it is OVERLY crowded and there is not enough seating available, which means either wait for a table, eat standing up, or take it back to your room. They really need to expand the area and add more seating. The hotel is huge and to have such a small “dining” area with limited seating is ridiculous!
