San Antonio River Walk

The first time I visited the San Antonio River Walk was back in 2002 and honestly, I don’t remember much, other than thinking “well if I have to puke, at least there is a river”. You would think from that statement, I must have been three sheets to the wind, but instead I was sick with a massive kidney infection which left me feeling the need to hurl every so often.

However, in 2015 I visited for the 2nd time and had a MUCH better experience. We decided to take the kids last Christmas (2016) and they enjoyed it as well.

The last two times we went, we went just a couple of days before Christmas. Let me tell you, the San Antonio River Walk at Christmas is so beautiful. Thousands of lights hang from the tree’s along the River Walk and some of the businesses and restaurants also decorate.

BTW, we suggest eating at the Rainforest Cafe if you have never been to one!

In addition to being beautiful, there are a ton of restaurants and plenty of shopping to be had. You will find the River Walk is lined with restaurants and has easy access to shopping. Make sure you stop by the La Villita Historic Arts Village (easy access from the river walk with signs, you can’t miss it) for some cool little boutique shops!

I’d suggest walking the entire river walk loop at least once. The part of the river walk where the La Villita Historic Arts Village is located is less “populated” and has a completely different “feel”.

If you are not staying on the river walk, there is plenty of paid parking that will not only allow you quick access to the river walk but other areas of San Antonio as well.

If you coming down for the night or longer and have never been, I suggest staying at a hotel on the River Walk. Our last trip here, we stayed at the Drury Inn & Suites (click that to see pics and my review) and loved it. There is a restaurant on the river level, direct access to the River Walk, and it is in a pretty good location.
