“When Calls the Heart” Season Review

I was recently contacted by FishFlix.com about reviewing a Christian based series called When Calls the Heart. It had been a while since I had received a movie or show so I agreed to watch it and give it my honest review. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I am hooked. As a disclaimer, I must inform you that they sent me the When Calls the Heart Season 1 Collector’s Edition for free in exchange for my honest review.

About the Series

The series is set back in the 1800’s in a Coal Mining Town. My first thought was “an old western that is Christian based? How will this work?” Turns out, it works very well together. I should also mention that when I say Christian based, that I do not mean that this show is a “preachy” show (you all know what I mean). Instead, it is written around Christian beliefs and wholesome goodness.

The show tells the tale of a high society young teacher (Elizabeth Thatcher) who moves to a very small, coal mining town as her first teaching assignment after graduating college. The young high society teacher actually chose this assignment despite her father and family’s reservations and fear for her safety. Upon arriving she finds that the majority of the miners (and fathers to the children she is teaching) were killed in a mining accident shortly before her arrival.

She is faced with challenges of simple life and trying to earn the respect of the mother’s who believe she doesn’t have what it takes due to her upbringing. While there, the meets the new Constable (Jack Thornton) who is not too happy to be assigned in Coal Valley thanks to Elizabeth’s father as a way to look out for her.

At the beginning Jack is annoyed with Elizabeth and Elizabeth is annoyed with Jack. In other words the perfect start to any romance! There are twists and turns and the show will keep you wanting more.

My Thoughts on When Calls the Heart

At first, I had to twist my husband’s arm to watch it, but after the first episode, he was hooked. In his words, “that was a really good show, I never fell asleep once.” Guys that is a huge thing with my husband. He’s been known to fall asleep during his favorite movies!

As for me, I was instantly hooked. We ended up binge watching the first season because we couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. My husband spent the last half of the season yelling at the TV “just kiss her already”. Once the season ended we knew we needed to go out and buy the other seasons. Speaking of, you can get a $5 coupon to use at FishFlix.com (they sell Christian Movies) if you join their email list or text 5-GIFT to 44222.

This is truly a show that the entire family can sit down and enjoy together which is, unfortunately, becoming more and more uncommon in this day and age of television.

You can find all the When Calls the Heart DVD’s available on FishFlix.com. You can find the current season on the Hallmark Channel.
