Recently we had the chance to visit the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The museum is huge (115,000 square feet) and holds one of a kind corvettes like the 1978 Silver/25th Anniversary Corvette.
You start the tour with a green screen photo op and a short movie.
Exhibits change out frequently, so you can go several times a year and see different corvettes that are on loan from their owners.
Sinkhole of 2014 & Crushed Corvettes
One of the main exhibits is the Corvette Cave In: The Skydome Sinkhole Experience which tells the story of the February 12, 2014 sinkhole in the Museum’s Skydome which swallowed eight Corvettes.

In addition to learning about sinkholes, you can learn about what was done to repair (and make sure it doesn’t happen again) the skydome and the recovery process of the corvettes that were swallowed.
You can also peer down into a manhole that leads to a side of the cave.

On display are all eight of the corvettes that were swallowed by the sinkhole. Some were able to be restored and others were not.
My Thoughts & Tips
Definitely worth the visit (even if you are not a corvette nut like my husband and step-dad). I was in awe seeing all of these old cars on display and being able to see how they have progressed over the years.
I kind of expected a big warehouse type structure with mostly pictures, but the museum is really well set up and feels more like you are visiting a museum like the Smithsonian.
Plan to spend 1-2 hours there. Also, there is parking for RV’s, tractor trailers and other large/oversized vehicles.
Pets are not allowed, so plan to make plans for them.
