Rara National Park – An emerging destination of Nepal

Amongst the great Himalaya of Nepalese terrain, there are still many unseen landscapes and hidden pockets of wilderness which blesses the country with immense natural beauty. Rara National Park is one of few hidden natural treasures in Mugu district of Nepal carrying the potential of being the next tourist destination in the country. After the scenic flight to Jumla via Nepalgunj from Kathmandu, the trail begins to the largest lake in the country. It is an ‘off the beaten trail’ which involves the crossing of Ghurchi Lagna Pass at 3450m on the way to Rara Lake and a few ridges at around 3000 meters. The journey itself is an awesome escapade for adventure seekers, while they traverse through the rough landscape and high passes. September to October and April to May are the best times to undertake this trek because of the clear skies and mild weather with a soft touch of wind-making this adventure more wonderful. The whole journey through the high hills will surely test your physical abilities.

The socio- cultural aspects of the region has a vast economic difference in comparison to the developed cities. This beautiful landscape is still properly untouched by the human influence and there is an ever presence threat of overpopulation destroying this beautiful region. Now, it is up to the Nepalese government the locals to promote and maintain this beautiful habitat. No one knows what future will look like and how it’s going to be but, if the standard is maintained and this area is promoted and made a sustainable and accessible destination, then sure this region will become one of the famous destination for both domestic and international tourist.

The prime highlights of the Rara Lake trek are the 1074 floral and faunal species found in this area. Followed by Sinja Valley on the way to the Lake that is another culturally important landmark, which holds the significant history dating back from 12th to 14th century. The proposed UNESCO Heritage Site is the place, where the original Nepali language was originated. Besides, the valley is an ideal place to observe the culture of “Khas” tribe. And for trekkers, it gives a chance to sight the nomadic lifestyle at some places and the ancient civilization of Nepal at others. In brief, the trek is the ideal blend of cultural and natural aspects of off the beaten trails of Wild West Nepal.
