5 Date Ideas for When You’re Sick of Getting Drinks: Week of March 28th

1. Bingo Night at Treadwell Park

If you and your date are Upper East Siders, you’re probably not bereft of your share of excellent restaurants and upscale bars. But at times the area can seem a bit predictable, lacking the same coolness factor as Williamsburg and Tribeca. If you’re looking for more than your garden variety pub or Italian restaurant, take your date to Treadwell Park, a 7,000 square ft. beer hall on 61st Street. This sort of environment is hard to find in Manhattan and is reminiscent of Radegast Hall and Biergarten in Williamsburg (one of my favorites,) but without having to make the trek across the river. They have everything you’d expect from a traditional beer hall: roaring fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, a vast list of hand-selected craft beer and cider along with a killer menu including Smoked Pork Nachos, Kimchi Griddle Cakes, and their famous TWP’s “Wust Sampler.” Along with the wurst (which happens to be the BEST–sorry, couldn’t resist,) they offer free popcorn, ping pong, and a very cool “Dirty Harry” Pinball machine. This Monday (and every Monday) you two should press your luck and stop by for their Bingo Night. Win some awesome prizes and hopefully each other’s hearts in the process. And if you don’t happen to win, it’s easy to drown your sorrows with one of their Beer Floats either made with blue cheese ice cream or bacon-and-chocolate ice cream. BINGO!!!

Treadwell Park, 1125 1st Ave, New York, NY, Mondays from 7-10pm

2. American Psycho on Broadway

Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?  There’s very few musicals that straight men actually enjoy. I am a self-diagnosed Broadway musical junkie, and I’ve always tried to take my dates to theater that holds their attention and hopefully keeps them awake until the second act. But this is one musical that ALL men will enjoy, I guarantee it. We all know and love that seemingly perfect, creepy as f*ck wealthy investment banker who has other hedonistic interests at night. Well, believe it or not, they made a freaking musical out of American Psycho. While it doesn’t seem like the most normal of choice for the Broadway stage, this Direct from Sold out Run in London is currently in previews at Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. It’s also getting rave reviews…just don’t go and expect The King and I or Wicked. With music by Grammy and Tony winning composer, Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening,) this is obviously a much more dark, sexy and haunting piece of theater. It may not have Christian Bale, but Benjamin Walker flawlessly plays everyone’s favorite psychopath, Patrick Bateman.

Gerald Schoenfeld Theater: 236 W. 45th Street, New York, NY, Tickets: $69 and up, Buy HERE

3. Treat Yourself to a Real Smorgasburg

If you haven’t been to been to Williamsburg Smorgasburg, you have no excuse not to this Saturday, April 2nd when it reopens for the year. It’s a wonderful “Day Date” idea, especially with this unseasonably warm spring weather we’ve been having. If you’re cool with crowds, then bike over to Williamsburg as a couple and visit the waterfront at East River State Park. Or the two of you can also take the ferry straight there from pretty much anywhere else in the city, which is a romantic adventure in itself and a steal at $6 a ride. As the name suggests, this is basically a huge outdoor market featuring all local eats to satisfy any craving you may have. I’d definitely recommend you not doing a couples brunch beforehand as you’ll want to bring your appetites. Vendors include Best Buds Burrito, Dough (phenomenal fancy donuts,) People’s Pops (a Brooklyn staple and the best all- natural popsicles you’ll ever taste,) Goa Taco (you’d better GOa!,) and Butter and Scotch (for all your sweet and spicy desires.)

Smorgasburg: Reopens Saturday, April 2nd 11am-6pm, 90 Kent Ave, Brooklyn, NY

4. Get High at a Trapeze Class

If you’re an avid reader of this column (which you should be) you know that I always advocate for thinking way outside of the box to really wow your date. Dinner and drinks? Dullsville. Dating should be exhilarating! It should be an excuse for both of you to try new and different things and actually grow as people at the same time as getting closer to one another. After all, our time is short. Let’s make the most of it, shall we? That’s why this next idea, while it may be scary to some, is great for adrenaline junkies, those who may be stuck in a rut, or anyone who wants to face their fears. One word: Trapeze. It’s not just for circus performers, folks. Here in NYC trapeze classes have become as cool and trendy as SoulCycle. The world renown TSNY (Trapeze School New York,) located at Pier 40 at the Hudson River Park, offers group and solo (or partner) classes for all skill levels. What’s a better way to show off your own athleticism, flexibility, and adventurous spirit.

TSNY: 353 West Street, New York, NY, PRICE: $50-70 per class

5. Wednesday Karaoke @ West End Lounge

If you happen to be a wild, wild westsider and live above 100th Street you may be running out of date options. So, make sure to visit the West End Lounge nestled on the corner of 107th street and West End Ave. This multipurpose date spot is a lounge, restaurant, sports bar, cabaret, and all-around performance space. If you’re more of the straightlaced type, I’d stick up front for sports, great drinks, and a jovial crowd. However, if you and your partner are more open-minded and like to really live outside of the square box, you’ve already gotten past the stage of polite pleasantries, and now feel comfortable enough to let your hair down a little and maybe even dare to embarrass yourselves, you’ll have to venture to the back room. Wednesdays are the night to go to this lounge for a night of Karaoke hosted by everyone’s favorite “Karaoke Jack.” (You never know, the two of you may just become regulars.) But make sure you get there early as it does tend to fill up–and patrons here are serious about their karaoke. If you’re not a great singer and want to sit this one out, there’s a ton of talent in the room to enjoy (or laugh at.) If you guys want to get even more revved up there’s a campy drag show the same evening preceding Karaoke called C’Mon Wednesdays. Never has HumpDay been so sexy!!
