Social Media Surpasses TV as Top News Source in YouGov's 2024 Trend Report

YouGov's "The US Media Morph: 2024 trend report" shows that American users are frequently turning to Social Media for news.

25% of users reported that their main source of news is the Television. This was 31% in 2019, which shows a decreasing trend.

Moreover, social media news viewers have increased from 12% to 18%. The study also signifies that for users under 34, social media has taken over TV completely.

Simultaneously, 26% of users reported paying for accessing online magazine content. This trend has also seen an upsurge from 19% in 2019.

However, a whopping 53% of users reported ads to be a mere time waste. 46% said that ads are helpful for purchases. This has also shown a decreasing trend from 49% in 2019.

The study makes another important revelation. It depicts that on-demand Television streaming has increased from 8% to 12% during 2019 and 2023. It has now grown to be the most preferred ad medium according to customers.

Moving on, the demand for social media in advertising has decreased since 2019.

Facebook reigns supreme with a 68% user base. However, YouTube and TikTok growth patterns are commendable at 51% and 26% respectively.

Generally speaking, almost 46% of Americans devote 6 or more hours/week to social media. This statistic goes to a humongous 60% for users aged 18-24.

WhatsApp has been growing rapidly, with a 9% increase in usage since 2021. However, it is still behind Facebook Messenger.

Vice President at YouGov America, Ryan Gmerek poured some insights on the topic. He reports that the current preferred channels for video consumption are social media and video streaming. Americans aged 55 or more mostly utilize TV, but that trend is also changing. They are also shifting towards social media and streaming channels for news sources.
