We caught up with one of our blog network members, Aprill Coleman, a Beauty blogger, to chat with her about her blog, Hey Aprill. Her lifestyle and beauty blog is all about celebrating mothers and women of color. She casts herself as the beauty problem-solver and effectively speaks to a demographic that is often ignored online. Tell us about yourself

My name is Aprill Coleman, owner of the blog Hey Aprill, and I am also a freelance writer. Hey Aprill has been on the web for five years now. My six year anniversary is May 2016 and I am excited! I review Beauty Products, with an emphasis on those for women of color. I also write some lifestyle posts. I am a married mother of five children from Jackson, MS. Although beauty is my passion, I also love to fish, grill, and binge-watch documentaries.

What made you a beauty blogger?

I ran out of money to finish my degree. I was a stay-at-home mom and I needed something to do in my spare time. I love beauty products and I wanted brown girls to have a safe space on the web to enjoy beauty products fit for them. I am really happy that I was able to reinvent myself through blogging and it is now my full-time job!

What is the most popular topic on your site?

Beauty for sure. My readers are passionate about finding the best skin-care products, and affordable cosmetics that fit their needs. Five Products Every Skincare Stash Needs is my hottest article. I give very in-depth reviews of products. A few of these reviews are sponsored, but I am always honest.

Who do you write for?

I write for moms that do not have a lot of money but deserve to look and feel beautiful. I write for women of color who are afraid to put on a bright red lipstick, or some other bold tone. As a mother and a woman of color, I always found it difficult to find products that fit my needs. I am working to change that. I want my blog to be a resource for all women.

What is your goal for your blog?

I want to be the beauty problem-solver! I want to move into the new year continuing to create relevant, helpful, and engaging content. A new blogging trend is born every day, but I’m sticking to my guns. Content is king, and everyone has a problem that makes them search for a solution.
