Top Safety Tips for Working at Heights in 2020 – Part 2

If you started with part 1, you are well on your way to working safely at heights. Let’s look at a few more safety tips for working at heights.

Choose the Right Equipment

Yes, as you read in part 1, choosing the right Ladder is important, but you have to make sure a ladder is the right option. Sometimes, a scaffold or lift makes more sense.

Just like harnesses you will use for fall protection are not a one-size-fits-all thing, neither is the equipment you use to reach the heights you will work at. Scaffolds offer a great option for working at heights, but sometimes a ladder or a lift does make more sense.

Use Railings

When possible, use railings for added protection. If you’re working on a flat rooftop, adding temporary railings to the edges is a great way to make the environment safer. Scaffolds can also be outfitted with the right railings to ensure tools and workers don’t fall off.

Choose a Good Anchor Point

When using fall protection equipment, you want to make sure you choose an anchor point that can handle at least 5,000 pounds. You also want to ensure it’s designed and approved by an engineer or it may not be a good choice.

If you don’t know, find someone that does instead of choosing something like PVC pipe, decorative steel or something else. An anchor point has to be acceptable or your fall protection equipment won’t help save you.

Train and Retrain

Nothing beats proper safety training when working at heights. Workers should be trained and regularly re-trained to ensure accidents don’t happen. The right training goes a long way to ensure all safety measure is properly followed.

If you need to work at heights, safety comes first. Whether you work high up regularly or just occasionally, you need to follow proper safety protocol at all times. Don’t get lazy with it just because you work from heights every day.
