Know the Dangers of Loft Ladders

A Loft Ladder gives you access to another area of your home, such as the attic or an actual loft. Just about everybody will use one of these ladders at some point in time.

It’s not uncommon to find loft ladders built into the loft hatch in modern homes. Some older homes will feature smaller loft hatches and may not have the same type of Loft Ladder.

No matter the type of loft ladder, you should understand the dangers of using this type of ladder. Just like any other ladder, they can be very safe, when used properly.

Install the Right Type of Ladder

If you own an older home with a loft ladder requiring you to use a step stool to reach it, you may want to consider installing a better loft ladder. Using a step stoop leads to issues as you may end up standing on the top rung of the ladder.

In some older homes, you may not even have a loft ladder. If this is the case, don’t try to use a step stool to reach the loft hatch. Instead, have a loft ladder installed or use a straight ladder that will reach into the hatch until you can have a loft ladder installed properly.

Inspect Regularly

Often, it can be easy to forget about the loft ladder in your home, but it can become damaged. Don’t wait until an accident happens to inspect the ladder. Perform regular inspections at least once per year to ensure the loft ladder is still in good working condition. It’s also a good idea to give it a quick inspection every single time you use it.

Exercise Caution with Spring Loaded Loft Ladders

Some loft ladders have springs to ensure they can easily be stowed away and don’t fall down when pulling the hatch open. These loft ladders need to be treated with caution as they can spring back and hit you in the head if you’re not careful. Make sure you understand how to use your loft ladder and always be cautious when pulling it down and putting it away.

Loft ladders can be a great tool in your home to access the attic or another type of space. Make sure your loft ladder is safe and properly installed by inspecting it regularly.
