Robert Keegan from the Rahi Australia Team is Running 250km to Help Raise Awareness of Mental Illness

Sydney’s scenic coastal trails with breathtaking ocean views inspire many running enthusiasts. Rahi’s Robert Keegan has turned his passion for running into a charitable purpose.

Robert committed to running 250km during the month of October to raise money for the Black Dog Institute. This internationally recognized not-for-profit organization is a pioneer in identifying, preventing, and treating Mental illness and is dedicated to improving lives through innovative research, effective clinical treatments, and increased access to mental health services.

The One Foot Forward challenge is designed to encourage people to walk, run or roll in solidarity with the 20 percent of Australians who experience symptoms of Mental Illness each year.

How It All Started

Starting several years ago, Robert struggled with mental health issues due to some big life changes, and he began running the 3.5km coastal walking trail from Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach as a form of personal therapy. That was also when he became acquainted with the institute through a friend in his running group.

Robert’s own experience makes this initiative extra meaningful on a personal level. At Rahi, “Giving Back” is a core value widely appreciated by the whole organization. Robert’s participation in this charitable cause matches Rahi’s culture of giving back to the community.

Better Together

To support Robert in his endeavor, Tony Khoury, General Manager of Rahi Australia, made a generous donation in representation of the whole Rahi Australia team. “Well done on committing to this. We are very happy to be supporting you in this initiative in trying to help those less fortunate than ourselves.” Said Tony.  The initiative ties in nicely with Rahi’s values, which include integrity and ethics, trust and support, and giving back to the community. Besides the donation from family and friends, Robert has also received personal support and encouragement through social media. It’s a tough challenge, but we believe that Robert is up to the task!

Mental health has always been something that human beings struggle with, although the topic has become more normalized in recent years. Covid and lockdowns have also had an added impact on people’s mental health. At Rahi, we can only hope to raise more awareness in this area by supporting and encouraging causes like this. Currently, Robert enjoys life in Australia with his two sons, his partner, Leanne, and her two children. He runs marathons and ultra-marathons and has participated in shorter events with his boys. With an initial goal of raising AU$5000, Robert has already surpassed AU$7000. He’s hoping that a last-minute effort will push contributions past AU$8000 before the challenge ends. You can support Robert’s efforts by donating here before Oct. 31.
