She was raised by her father, Marion St. Pierre MacDowell, who was a lumber manager, and mother Pauline ‘Paula’ Johnston, who worked as a music teacher. The role earned her a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead. She then starred as Brontë Parrish in the 1990 romantic Comedy “Green Card”, for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
