He graduated from high school with honors in 1974 and spent a year as a cadet at the Air Force Academy before retiring from the service to attend Sterling College.

Gilyard was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and played football in college. He was also offered a tennis scholarship, but dropped out before completing his studies. Gilyard lived with his parents throughout high school and dabbled in women, alcohol, and sometimes narcotics. He and a friend moved to Long Beach, California in response to his parents’ desire to leave. Clarence studied acting at California State University, Long Beach, working as a waiter between auditions. He received a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Gilyard worked at a job with a roommate where he eventually rose to the rank of manager. He temporarily stopped this to deal with the marketing of industrial chemicals. Gilyard returned to school in 2003 and earned a master’s degree in fine arts in theater performance from Southern Methodist University.

Gilyard appeared in Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire, a 2005 television movie. Gilyard returned to acting in 2012, after taking a break to teach, mostly in unaffiliated plays. In 2014, he starred in the spiritual film A Matter of Faith. Gilyard starred alongside Sheree J. Wilson, a former co-star of Walker, Texas Ranger, in the Neil Simon Festival production of Driving Miss Daisy on January 17, 2016 at the University of New Mexico’s Popejoy Hall.
