Private life

In 1985, at a Jerry Lee Lewis concert at Club Bluenote, his drummer, Dennis Graham, met Sandi Graham, asked her for a cigarette…and the couple got married. Sandi gave birth to Drake soon after. Unfortunately, Sandi and Dennis did not have a happy marriage and found it too difficult to start a family together, so they divorced in 1991, when Drake was five years old. Sandi continued to live in Canada with Drake and Dennis moved to Memphis, USA. She was given full custody of Drake, but experienced many financial difficulties. Due to such difficulties, Sandi and Drake moved to Forest Hill where she could only work low paying jobs.

Although Sandi struggled financially, she made sure that Drake was never short of anything he needed. She tried her best to give him the best regarding his music and education. She raised Drake with traditional Jewish customs, meaning he had his bar mitzvah when he was 13 years old. The mother-son duo is very close. He has made it known that he considers his mother his hero and best friend, even dedicating awards and songs to her.

Who is Drake?

Aubrey Drake Graham was born on October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a famous rapper, songwriter, actor, singer, producer and businessman. His father is of African American descent and his mother is of Jewish ethnicity.

He first showed a love of art when he attended Forest Hill Collegiate Institute and did some acting. He later attended Vaughan Road Academy in Oakwood-Vaughan, a town notorious for being multicultural. According to Drake, the school was “definitely not the easiest school to go to,” taking into account the economic status of the neighborhood.

At school, Drake was bullied because of his race and religious beliefs. He decided that school was taking too much time to pursue his acting career, so he dropped out. He finally graduated from high school in October 2012, as he regretted not finishing high school.

He rose to fame as an actor for his role as Jimmy Brooks in the drama television series “Degrassi: The Next Generation” – Jimmy was a wheelchair-bound character and pursued a music career. In 2002 he won a Young Artist Award for the best ensemble in a television series. He finally left the show in 2007, after releasing his debut mixtape ‘Room for Improvement’.

In 2010, he released his debut album titled “Thank Me Later”, and in 2011 “Take Care”, for which he won his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. “Views” was released in 2016 as his fourth studio album and broke several charts, including the first album by a male solo artist to top the Billboard 200 for 13 consecutive weeks in over a decade. The album’s lead single, “Hotline Bling”, received Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance, and peaked at number two on the Hot 100.

“One Dance” was the album’s second single, and it became Drake’s first number-one single as a lead artist, topping the charts in several countries. In 2016, he led both the Billboard 200 and Billboard 100 charts for the same eight weeks.

His double album ‘Scorpion’ was released in 2018 and broke several streaming records. The album features his Grammy Award-winning number one single, “God’s Plan,” as well as other number one hits, “In My Feelings” and “Nice for What.” Drake is listed as one of the world’s best-selling music artists, having reportedly sold over 170 million albums worldwide, and has been ranked as the world’s top certified digital singles artist by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Among the Billboard charts, he holds a number of records. Such records include most simultaneous-charting Hot 100 songs in one week (27), highest-charting songs by solo artist of all time in Billboard Hot 100 history (205), most Hot 100 debuts in one week (22) and most times on the Hot 100 (431 weeks). He has the most number one singles on the Rhythmic Charts, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Hot Rap Songs. In total, Drake has won six American Music Awards, three Juno Awards, twenty-seven Billboard Music Awards, and four Grammy Awards.

He co-founded his record label, OVO (October’s Very Own) Sound, in 2012 with his longtime colleague, Noah “40” Shebib.

On October 11, 2017, French artist Sophie Brussaux gave birth to Drake’s son, Adonis. In early 2017, a TMZ article speculated on the possibility of Sophie being pregnant, but the pregnancy was not confirmed until 2018 on Drake’s fourth studio album, “Scorpion”.

His father has two daughters with two other women, making them Drake’s half-sisters.
