May 30 - new lens review diary "Beta Readers"
If you want to be among the first to check out the new version of the Lens Review Diary as a "Beta Reader", be sure to check out this post at the main blog.

May 17: Version 2 is in the works!
We have good news for fans of the Lens Review Diary! Version 2.0 has received the "green light". We still have to do the background work to get it set-up and organized, but version 2.0 should be up and running by the end of the month. The new version will have an RSS feed and other modern-era "blog luxuries", unlike version 1.0 which is just a long website. More details as they become available.

If you are interested in checking version 2.0 before everyone else, we will have a class for beta-readers in the next few days, so please stay tuned!

April 19
A new review for the new Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens is out and it is at critically-acclaimed review site Photozone, first up in the full-frame context and then in the APS-C context. Obviously the majority of Canon DSLRs out there are APS-C, even when you factor in the price of this lens.

April 12
From the better-late-than-never department, LensTip has translated in english their Canon 20mm f2.8 review from 2006. That feels like a long time ago in digital-camera-years, but of course lenses have (typically) a lot more staying power than DSLRs.

April 5
A Zeiss-upon-Canon review is now out at PhotoZone - it is the 35mm f2 Distagon T-Star (oh my, okay, T*), tested on the 5D Mark II. They evaluate the ZF (Nikon) via adapter.

Next up, a translated review from Lens Tip from 2006, it is the Sigma 28mm f1.8, an EX DG macro lense.

March 29: catching up
This is a catch-up roundup including some of the reviews we missed earlier in the week. We start though with a brand new review, the Sony 70-200mm f2.8G by Andy Westlake at dpreview.

Then we go to ephotozine for a quick review of the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Macro lens. They tested the Nikon version on the D700.

Next up, Leica time at Lens Tip where they post the english translation of their XMas 2009 review of the Leica Summicron 28mm f2 Asph. If you can read Polish, then you can get their reviews faster in Polish at optyczne.pl.

Staying at Lens Tip, they also have a review of the Canon 18-55mm IS, yes the kit lens - a mid-2008 review now translated.

And we close this round-up with a Shiguma review at ALC, of the 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC OS HSM Macro lens. Some of the lens names are longer than railroads these days ;-) This particular lens was reviewed on the Canon 40D - the only Canon DSLR you will ever need ;-)

Another not-very-affordable lens got reviewed today as well, this time it is the Zeiss 16-35mm f2.8 SSM at Photo Zone. This is of course a Sony Alpha DSLR lens. The first review we mentioned was that of the lens as a 35mmFF lens, and the second review of the lens is when used as an APS-C lens.

And now something old+new, the 2007 Polish review of the Nikon 70-300mm VR lens has been translated to English and it is available for reading at Lens Tip. This lens is part of the March 2010 Nikon instant rebates.

March 12
How do the two Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lenses compare? The ProPhotoShow has come up with a series of tests.

Forgot to mention this here, but the first review of the Noktor 50mm f0.95 lens for Micro Four Thirds has been published by Philip Bloom. This is a hybridographer's review, for the technical analysis we have to wait for the usual lens/DSLR review sites to put it in the lab.

Zoom zoom! Five standard Pentax lenses from different points in time were group-tested at Rice High, using the K-x DSLR at the test base.

March 5
Not everyone can drop $1000 for a brand new f2.8 macro lens - some may find the previous Canon 100mm f2.8 macro a reasonable trade-off. It is not a 2009 model and it does not have hybrid-IS, but it has a better price. The review is coming from PhotoZone.de. The non-hybrid-IS lens currently goes for under $550.

The Leica 50 Summitar Classic just got a new review, mounted on the Leica M9 at Steve Huff Photo.

March 4
A trade-off for many are the 3rd-party f2.8 telephoto lenses. One of such trade-off lenses is the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 Di, and this very lens was reviewed at ephotozine.

March 3
Of great interest to lens reviewing, Pop Photo answers a reader question about their SQL lens tests.

February 16
f1.2 time at Photo Review where they review the Canon 50mm f1.2L lens. Imatest, sample pictures, and more!

February 15
The first review of a Samsung NX-series lens is out! LensTip has just published their review of the Samsung 30mm f2 pancake. Eleven full pages, with samples and verdict on the last page! Enjoy :)

Zoom me up! PhotoZone is on a roll, a new lens review is out now, this one is a Four Thirds lens, the Olympus 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD. If you do the usual multiply-by-two math, this is the full-frame "equivalent" of 100-400mm.

Going even longer is Thom Hogan with his new review of the Nikon 200-400 f4 VR lens. This is obviously not a "bargain" lens, it goes for over $6000 at B&H Photo.

Speaking of Hogan he has a survey on his website asking readers what they want to see from Nikon lenses and things of that nature.

And now time for a shootout with the zooms at the Digital Grin forums. You can see the pictures at the photographer's gallery at DJDimages.com.

February 14
Imaging Resource is testing multiple units of the Nikon 50mm f1.4 G AF-S lens. See what they found out!

PhotoReview tests out the (roughly) digital-equivalent of the good old 28-105mm lens, in the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 DC OS macro HSM. The review used the Canon mount on a 40D, with Imatest and samples as usual.

As part of their E-P2 review, Camera Labs has also provided a sharpness test for the Olympus 17mm f2.8 pancake lens.

February 13

Tilt-and-shift, tilt-and-shift, and then review ;-) PhotoZone is back with a new review, of the Canon 17mm f4L TS-E. This includes their usual review action, but they also offer a primer if you are not familiar with tilt-shift lenses. As you can expect, this lens has a price premium, it goes for around $2450 at Amazon right now.

Bob Atkins has published a review of the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC Di-II lens at Photo.net. As usual, we won't spoil the findings here.

February 12
Canon's new star lens, the 100mm f2.8 hybrid IS macro gets put under the ...macro-scope at Digital Camera Review where they put it through the paces. Samples on the second page, conclusions on the third page!

We normally don't mention subscriber-only content since most people won't be able to read it but we are making an exception here, the aforementioned Canon lens takes on the Zeiss 100mm f2 Makro-Planar at digglloyd ($).

February 11
Photozone.de reviews the Tamron 60mm f2 Di-II, a made-for-cropped-sensor macro lens that is the APS-C equivalent of the popular 90mm Tamron full-framer. Check for more reviews below...

On the pre-order front, Amazon has began accepting pre-orders for the new Nikon 16-35mm f4 VR lens at $1260.

February 10
Shiguma time again, as LensTip.com reviews the versatile Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 macro DC OS HSM lens. This is their usual 11-page detailed review, with conclusions and samples on the last page. The samples are taken with the Canon 50D. (DC is Sigma-speak for a lens made for cropped-sensors, so you get -roughly- the 35mm-equivalent of 28-105mm on the 1.5x DSLRs, and slightly more telephoto-ish with Canon, even more so with Sigma DSLRs (1.7x).

February 9
Camera Labs has published a new lens review, featuring the recently announced Canon EF-S 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS lens. They tested it using the 7D and the D-Rebels. If you are not familiar with Camera Labs, be sure to follow the pink tabs to see all the review segments!

February 6
A new review is in the books for the Tamron 60mm f2 Di-II macro lens at Alpha Mount World. This is the first attempt by Tamron to "port" their popular 35mm-full-frame 90mm f2.8 macro lens to the APS-C/DX format. Being Alpha Mount World, the review was done using the Alpha mount on Sony DSLRs. As usual, we won't spoil the findings here.

February 4
DX time at Lens Tip where they have completed their review of the Tamron 16.5-135mm f3.5-5.6 DX lens. This is roughly (but not quite) the equivalent of the good old film SLR 28-200mm lenses. A versatile range for sure. And we may get an Alpha version eventually since a couple of days ago Tokina decided to make their 11-16mm f2.8 AT-X DX available for Sony Alpha Minolta.

February 3
Samyang-time at PhotoZone where they review the very affordable Samyang 85mm f1.4 lens. This is a 35mmFF lens. Samples are included with the 5D Mark II. Conclusions as usual on the third page, but we won't spoil them here.

February 2
Photo Club Alpha has just posted their brief test of the just-announced Sony Alpha Minolta mount version of their 11-16mm f2.8 DX Macro AT-X lens. Tokina lenses had been historically available for Canon and Nikon only, so this marks their first bold step in ...stepping out of their comfort-zone-bubble. We covered the announcement yesterday on the main blog.

February 1
Zoom-zoom at dpreview with Andy Westlake evaluating the Shiguma 18-250mm DC OS superzoom lens. The review samples are of the Canon variety using the 7D, 50D and D-Rebel. Conclusions on last page, which as usual, we won't reveal here.

Leica time again at Steve Huff's, this time it is the Summicron 50mm f2.5 that gets checked out. The Leica M9 "helped" with the review...

January 26
EF-S time at LensTip.com, where they have published their take on the Canon EF-S 15-85mm IS USM lens. This is intended to be a versatile zoom for APS-C Canon-mount shooters. But as you can expect, the lens has a Canon-premium-price-tag attached to it, it's current price is around $730 at Amazon.com.

January 25
If you are looking for reviews of older manual Nikon-mount lenses, be sure to bookmark the lens review page at Taishimizu.com. Ten lenses are currently reviewed there and more coming up!

If you are interested in an f2.8 zoom but don't want to spend the big bucks for the house-brand lens, the TamTokSigs can offer a good value alternative. Slowly but steadily, the TamTokTigs have embraced the APS-C sensor-cropped-lenses and Photo Zone dot de reviews the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC. Yes, VC is Tamron-speak for image stabilization. Their review was the Canon-flavor. Conclusions and samples taken with the 7D are on the 3rd page of the review.

January 23
Leica lens time at Steve Huff Photo with a review of the Leica Summarit 35mm f2.5 lens. The M9 was used as the "hostess" of the review!

January 22
