Here’s How to Make Any Apartment Healthier to Live In

Creating a healthier Living space is something you want to prioritize, primarily because it directly impacts your well-being. Your apartment is where you spend a significant portion of your life, so making it a place that won’t actively make you ill is practical if nothing else.

How? Besides the basics like pest control and regular cleaning, there is plenty you can do.

Here are 3 tips.

Prioritize Good Air Quality

Poor air quality is a good way to open yourself up to respiratory issues, allergies, and a general feeling of discomfort.

You want to introduce houseplants into your living space. These air-purifying plants, such as snake plants, peace lilies, or aloe vera, help remove Toxins from the air. Aim to have at least one plant for every 100 square feet of living space.

Then, investing in a quality air purifier with a HEPA Filter is a good idea. Choose one with a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) that matches your room size and be sure to regularly change the filters.

Opening windows regularly is also simple yet effective for good airflow, and using exhaust fans when cooking or showering can further improve the air quality in that way.

Get Rid of Toxins

It’s in the name – toxins are bad for you, with long-term health effects like respiratory issues and chemical sensitivities.

Admittedly, it’s tricky to completely get rid of toxins in your home. Still, there’s plenty you can do to significantly reduce. You want to:

  • Use non-toxic cleaners that are eco-friendly and less harmful to your health. You can even make your cleaning solutions with simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils
  • Choose low-VOC or VOC-free paints for any repainting needs; open windows while painting, and allow the space to ventilate for several days to reduce the off-gassing of harmful chemicals
  • Filter tap water. Install a water filter on your kitchen tap or use a pitcher with a water filter. Then regularly replace the filter cartridges according to the manufacturer’s guidelines to maintain clean and toxin-free drinking water

Curate a Relaxing Space

You want your apartment to be a place of calm and comfort because a clean, clutter-free, comforting living space means a lot less stress, more sleep, better mental health – really an overall healthier quality of life.

Start by setting a regular schedule for decluttering your living space. Focus on one area at a time, sorting items into categories like keep, donate, or store.

Then, take advantage of the soothing atmosphere that natural light creates. Use light, sheer curtains, or blinds that allow ample natural light to enter your apartment.

Finally, add your personal touch to the décor with artwork, framed photos, or personal items that hold sentimental value for you, arranging them strategically to project warmth and personality.

Seeing as you spend a significant amount of time where you live, why not make it as healthy as possible? Start by prioritizing good air quality, reducing toxins, and curating warmth and comfort.
