White House Announces Spectrum Auction to Fuel 5g Growth

The Trump administration on Monday revealed plans to auction 100 megahertz of midband Spectrum starting by mid-2022 to complete 5G coverage in United States. The spectrum was previously dedicated to military, but trump administration seems very interesting in developing the prospects in 5G.

The Federal Communications Commission can auction the spectrum from December 2021 to companies like AT and T and Verizon communications. The wireless and telecom industry will be allowed to monetize it by mid-2022.

The move “allows us to maximize 5G availability of spectrum without compromising national security,” U.S. Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios told reporters.

According to Defense Chief Information Officer Dana Deasy, The military uses the spectrum for critical radar operations like air missile defense and air tracking.

The efforts of FCC are clearly visible. They are trying to clear enough spectrum to make 5G grow rapidly in the United States.

Back in October 2018, US President Donald Trump signed a military  and directed Commerce Department to develop a long-term spectrum plan and strategy to prepare the country for the next bug wave, that is 5G.

The US wireless industry surely rejoiced the announcement. CTIA President and CEO, Meredith Attwell Baker, said in a statement, “Opening up this critical block of mid-band spectrum for full power commercial operations will enhance U.S. competitiveness in the 5G ecosystem,”.
