Windows 10 Storage Diagnostic Tool to fix Hard Drive and File System Issues

Windows 10 Anniversary Update introduces a new command line Tool StorDiag.exe or Storage Diagnostic Tool  to diagnose various aspects of drives connected to your PC. that allows System Administrators to collect and analyze storage-related data, which can help them to troubleshoot Hard Disk and storage diagnostic issues.

The Storage Diagnostic tool can be useful for system administrators and advanced users who need to find and analyze storage related issues. If your suspect your disk drive of a problem, the Storage Diagnostic tool can be useful in identifying the issue since it collects various data about drives and the file system. The application can only be run from an elevated command prompt. Since it is only available in Windows 10’s Anniversary Edition. The application runs several tools in the background for that, including CheckDisk, fsutil and fltmc.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update includes a new Storage Diagnostic tool to diagnose various aspects of drives connected to your PC. If your suspect your disk drive of a problem, the Storage Diagnostic tool can be useful in identifying the issue since it collects various data about drives and the file system.

The new tool is named StorDiag.exe. It collects storage and filesystem diagnostic logs and outputs them to a folder. It is a console tool, which can be accessed using the command prompt. It can save time by running all necessary tests automatically by running a single command.

The program supports three parameters that you can run it with. You may run stordiag.exe /? first to display them on the screen. To Run This Open an elevated command prompt. Right click on Windows 10 Start Menu And Select Command Prompt ( admin ) this will open the Command prompt window.

Now Type : stordiag.exe /?

This will output bellow

StorDiag [-collectEtw] [-out ]
-collectEtw  Collect a 30-second long ETW trace if run from an elevated session
-checkFSConsistency  Checks for the consistency of the NTFS file system
-out   Specify the output path. If not specified, logs are saved to %TEMP%StorDiag

Now to collect a ETW (Event Tracing for Windows) trace and check file system consistency, generate diagnostics logs and save them to your Desktop, run the following command:

stordiag.exe -collectEtw -checkFSConsistency -out %userprofile%\desktop

Once you start the task, you will see it carrying out several tasks, including running of ChkDsk, FSUtil, and so on. So instead of running tests individually, it will run several tests automatically.

StorDiag.exe does not resolve any of the issues that it may report. It is up to you or the system administrator to correct those.

Wait until the command to process . After complete this you will found a folder named StorDiag
 on your desktop.

You find the massive list of log files and event files in the -out directory afterwards.
