Sensing earthquakes

Reporting earthquakes in real-time has long been a significant research effort in the seismological community. In recent years, such efforts have been further refined towards developing Earthquake early warning systems that can issue warnings within a few seconds when the event occurs.

Ripples IOT Pte ltd has developed a solution to detect an earthquake and alerts the customers at the earliest. It is a unique solution combining the world’s smallest seismic sensor from Omron industries and high precision microcontrollers. 

Earthquake detection module

This Module can detect an earthquake even when the event occurs at a low pace. This helps in warning the customers at the earliest to take necessary action.

The earthquake monitoring module can be powered using 5V 1 Amp DC adaptor and comes with a built-in LiPo battery which provides two days of backup. After power, the module calibrates itself and listens for an earthquake. The earthquake detection module has two modes of alerting according to earthquake intensity:-

1. Warning mode – Activates when the earthquake occurs at a low intensity. In this mode, the module will alert the customer by flashing the LED and beeping the buzzer. In this case, the customer can take precautions.

2. Evacuation mode – Activates when the earthquake intensity is high. In this mode, the module will continuously power on the LED and buzzer. In this case, the occupants needs to evacuate the building immediately.

Thresholds are set according to the Shindo scale which detects vibration by each region rather than using the conventional Richter scale method which detects the magnitude of the epicenter of the earthquake. This is a unique feature of our module.
