Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them

When your run System File Checker Tool to scan and restore corrupted, missing or modified Windows files with the correct one and you receive this error message.

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log indir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.”

As we can read, this message says that the System File Checker scan is completed and it has found some corrupted system files. But it was unable to replace them with correct files.

Note:

-> Sign-in to your PC as an administrator in order to perform the fixes.

-> Elevated Command prompt: An Elevated Command Prompt is a cmd window with admin privileges pointing to C:\Windows\system32> folder.

Open an elevated command prompt by pressing Windows Key + X shortcut and selecting Command Prompt (Admin). You can do the same by right clicking on the start. A UAC will ask for confirmation, click or tap yes to continue.

Fix Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them

In case you get the above message when your run System file checker to scan and repair system files, try the  following methods below to resolve this error.

We will start with the easiest way to fix the issue. Make sure you are signed in as administrator on your Windows 10 PC.

1. Run SFC in Safe Mode

If your performed the can in normal mode and got this error, try doing the same in Safe mode. Safe mode loads Windows with minimal options and features thus reducing the conflicts. If it was a program causing the issue it will be resolved.

First, boot your computer into Safe mode. Open an elevated command prompt window by following the instructions above under note. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter to scan and fix the system files.

Wait for it to complete and see the results. If it fails, move to the next one.

2. Run System File Checker Offline

You can also run it before in offline mode with a Windows DVD. Boot from the DVD and select repair your computer on Install now page. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command prompt.

In the Command prompt windows, type the following command below and press Enter:

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d:\ /offwindir=d:\windows
I have used D, since the Windows drive is D. Replace it with your system drive which will be C.

When completed, type exit and press Enter. Reboot your computer and you are done.

3. Repair with DISM Commands

If the sfc.exe is still not able to scan and fix the system files (Windows), then it’s possible that the backup copy is also corrupted. In this case, the tool will fail every time you run it. So, you have to first fix the system backup stored on your computer with dism.exe tool.

The Deployment Image & Servicing Management Tool checks and repairs Windows component store. An internet connection is required as it downloads missing files with Windows Update. It takes time and needs patience.

Open an elevated command prompt and type the following command below and press Enter.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

The process will take a while, wait for the results. Here you will notice that it seems to be stuck at 20 percent but it’s working.

If an error occurs during the process, type and press Enter to perform a fresh scan.

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Then again run the /RestoreHealth command above with admin access.

-> If this fails then try the another command below.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

The /ScanHealth command checks your Windows image for any possible corruption. It can be a missing file, modified file or something else. From this, you will get an idea about the problem.

When finished with DISM and Windows components are repaired restart your computer. Now once again run the System File Checker tool and see if “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” appears.

4. Try Automatic Repair or Reset this PC

In Windows 10 you can perform an Automatic repair to resolve issues. If the automatic repair fails, try Reset this PC option with “keep my personal files” choice.

You will need a Windows 10 install media or a recovery drive. Sometimes you may not need them.

To perform Automatic repair start Windows 10 in Advanced startup. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options and select the Automatic repair option. See the screenshot below.

To use reset this PC insert the Windows 10 install media or recovery drive into your PC. Turn on your system and it will automatically boot from the connected media. Follow this guide for complete instructions.

5. Perform an In-Place Upgrade

In-Place Upgrade reinstalls Windows 10 /7 /8 without affecting your personal files and apps. It is very much similar to Reset but works differently. It’s better to backup your files before you continue.

First, close all open apps and save your work. Now insert the Windows DVD or USB into your computer. Open This PC and then open the DVD or USB and double click or tap on Setup.exe.

Continue with the new Window opened. Click Install Now and Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended).

Enter the product key if it asks, you can skip it for Windows 10. Next, select the operating system on Install Windows page to Upgrade. Select Yes to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms. Next, click Upgrade on Which type of installation do you want page. Once the process is completed, restart your PC.

Next, click Upgrade on Which type of installation do you want page. Once the process is completed, restart your PC.

6. Manually Replace Corrupted Files

The least favored method is to read the sfc log file and manually copy and paste the required files. It takes too much time and is complex also.

Before you start copying anything, you should know which file to copy and where. The answer is in the CBS.Log file but first, you have to convert it into a readable text file.

Open an elevated command prompt and type the following command below and press Enter.

findstr /c:”[SR]” %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >”%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt”

The above command will create a new file “Sfcdetails.txt” on the desktop. Open it and read to identify the files that could not be repaired.

Once you got the error follow the steps in this guide to repair them.

At the end once again open an elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow command. See if the “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” issue is fixed.
