Windows Resource Protection could not Start or Perform Error Fix

While using sfc scannow command to repair, if you get one of these two errors, here are some possible fixes. Use the tips below to troubleshoot the issue in Windows 10, 8, 8.1 and Windows 7.

These errors can be

“windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service”

or

“windows Resource protection could not perform the requested operation”

The System File Checker utility or well-known sfc /scannow scans Windows files for errors. If it finds an error, it automatically repairs the corrupted file with the fresh one. It uses Windows update service to download the fresh copy of the file from Microsoft servers.

But sometimes this utility fails to complete the repair process. The failure can occur due to a problem with services, windows dependencies or any other issue.

Windows resource protection could not start the repair service

The error gives a hint about the cause of the problem. Generally, it appears when Windows modules Installer Service is not running.

Windows Module Installer facilitates installation, modification of Windows updates, components, and programs. But if it stops all these actions will fail. It has to be running for a healthy Windows.

You can start Windows Installer Service or the TrustedInstaller service in two ways. Follow the steps below.

Elevated Command Prompt method

1. Press Windows key + X on the desktop and  select Command Prompt (Admin). You can also right-click on Start and select it.

2. A UAC dialog will appear, click or tap yes to confirm it.

3. In the command window type the following and press Enter.

sc config trustedinstaller start=auto

4. If the service configuration is fine, you would get “SUCCESS” message.

5. Then type the command below and press Enter to start the service.

net start trustedinstaller

A few more messages will appear, see the screenshot below.

Manual method

If you are not a fond of the command line, follow these steps.

1. Click or tap on Start and type services.msc and press Enter. Services Manager will open up.

2. Search for Windows Module Installer or TrustedInstaller service.

3. Double-click and check if the service is running or not. If it is disabled or stopped, click or tap Start to enable it again.

When the service has started successfully, run System File Checker tool and see if it works.

Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation

Troubleshoot “windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation” with these tips. If one method fails, try the other one.

The first thing you should try is, perform the  sfc scan in safe mode or offline.

Boot Windows into Safe mode using out guide.

In Safe mode open an elevated Command Prompt. For this right-click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin).

in Command window type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

Here you can also run SFC with the offline option. Use the command below.

sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows

In the line above, replace “c:” with system drive.

Wait for the result and see if it fixes the error.

There can be a disk error which can affect Windows resources. You can check your disk for errors by typing the following command and pressing Enter:

 chkdsk /r

In most of the cases, this fix works like a charm. But if it doesn’t work for you, still there are a few things you can do. Try to analyze the sfc log file CBS.Log located at %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. And try to figure out the problem.

You can also use DISM commands to repair Windows dependency resources automatically. Our guide will help you through each step.

you can also use other Windows recovery options. The easiest way is System Restore taking back your computer to a recent restore point in time.
