How to Change Windows 10 System Sounds

Windows 10 plays several sounds when there is a new notification, Program events such as UAC, system alerts and more. (An event can be an action that you perform, such as logging on to your computer, or an action that your computer performs.)

Windows 10 comes with a Default Windows sound schemes (a collection of related sounds) for common events. But you can make changes to it. You can use a custom audio of your choice for it.

I am not a fan of these sounds so I always keep them disabled. Customizing or disabling these for an event helps in reducing disturbance. It helps in reducing noise on your computer. There are many options to manage things in your own way.

I don’t like any type of noise either it’s an alert, notification, UAC permission and other beeps while working. Most of us mute speakers or reduce the volume to get rid of them. But when you play a media you have again increase volume. This situation can be avoided with these simple tips.

How to Enable Windows Startup Sound

Windows Startup Sound is disabled by default. I don’t know the reason behind it but it is turned off on all Windows 10 versions. To enable it follow these simple steps.

1. Move your mouse in the right corner and right-click on the speaker icon and select Sounds from the menu.

Alternatively, you can open Control panel and select Hardware and Sound. Click or tap on Sounds to open it.

2. In the opened windows select the Sounds tab and look at the bottom and check “Play Windows Startup Sound” box to enable it.

Click or tap Apply to complete the task.

Note: It is very important to note that Startup and Shutdown sounds will only play when you restart your system. In Windows 10 fast startup is enabled by default which skips startup and shutdown sounds for a faster boot. It is a kind of hibernation to quickly start and shutdown your PC.

But it will play in Restart because fast startup doesn’t affect Restart process. In this PC shutdown completely and starts again without skipping anything.

Tip: If you want to hear it every time then some extra roundup is required.

I will recommend not to go this way. It requires you to disable fast startup  in Windows 10  so that your computer completely shutdown or logoff.

How to Change Windows 10 Sounds

To change system sounds in Windows 10, continue with the same window above. The first step is to select a program event from the list for which you want to change the sound.

When selected look at the bottom and click or tap Browse button to locate a new file. The file should be in .wav format. If the file is in some other format convert it into .wav with an online tool.

For example, I have selected sleep under Windows Speech Recognization as program event. Speech Sleep is the default sound for it and to change it just click Browse and select your custom audio file.

You can check it by clicking or tapping |> Test button in the middle. If it is working fine click Apply to make changes permanent.

However, logon, logoff, and shutdown are missing from this list. Those particular sounds in Windows 10 settings are still there—they are just hidden. To reveal them in the Sounds control panel is to edit their entries in the Windows Registry.

Warning: The Windows Registry file is an important part of the Windows operating system. Incorrectly editing or playing with the Windows Registry file could prevent your computer from booting properly. You have been warned.

Click or tap start and type “regedit” and hit Enter. This is to open Registry editor.

Move your mouse in the left-hand pane of the regedit application and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\SystemExit

Click the System Exit key, you will see a label ExcludeFromCPL on the right hand. Double-click that DWORD and change the value from “1” to “0” and then click OK.

Repeat this for WindowsLogoff and WindowsLogon keys also:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\WindowsLogoff

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\WindowsLogon

After this, these options will ve available to make changes under Program Events under Windows.

How to Disable Windows Sounds

By default Windows default sound scheme is enabled for all program and Windows events. If you don’t like to hear these sounds, you can disable them. This includes notifications, alerts, UAC confirmations, and other audios. There are two ways to do it.

Disable All Windows Sounds

The first option is to disable all windows sounds at once. This will turn off all the sounds that you hear on your PC. But it doesn’t affect Media Player and other Program sounds that you play. Here’s how to do it?

In the opened window click or tap on Windows Default, a drop-down menu will appear. Select No Sounds to disable all sounds.

Click or tap Apply to make changes. After this, you will not hear any clip. You can enable it later if you like using the same instructions.

Disable a Single Program Event Sound

You can disable it for a single program event without affecting other options. To do this, select an event from the program events and click or tap on the “sound name” at the bottom. This will open a drop-down menu, select “none” at the top.

Click or tap Apply changes. To close it click or tap the OK button.
