Asus Zephyrus S gaming laptop up for pre-order, Here’s my take on the beast

Its official! Pre-order doors are open for gamers to grab their piece of meat viz. Zephyrus S. Earlier today, the ASUS sub-brand Republic of Gamers aka ROG started taking pre-orders of this device. This a different and exciting product. Let’s go through its details, one after the other. Zephyrus S, world’s thinnest gaming Laptop. Guys, this image is just and approximation of how slim it would look. Because, this image is edited to figure out how thin it would look when closed. The actual image is below in ‘L’ shape. It doesn’t look so slim, does it? Let’s not forget we are talking about a laptop and not a normal laptop, but, a gaming laptop. ASUS Rog Zephyrus S specifications GX531GS (Zephyrus S) GX531GM (Zephyrus S) Category AAA Gaming Operating System Windows 10 Home Windows 10 Pro – ASUS recommends Windows 10 Pro Processor Intel® Core™ i7-8750H Graphics NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 (Max-Q) NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 8GB GDDR5 VRAM 6GB GDDR5 VRAM Memory DDR4 2666MHz SDRAM Up to 24 GB (8 GB on board memory) SSD M.2 NVMe PCIE 3.0 x2 512GB SSD M.2 NVMe PCIE 3.0 x4 256GB / 512GB / 1TB SSD Display 15.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) IPS-level panel, 144Hz, 3ms, 100% sRGB VR Ready YES Keyboard Backlit chiclet keyboard Marked WASD keys Support 30/N key 4 zones RGB backlight mode 1.2mm travel distance Aura Sync Audio 2x 2W speakers with Smart AMP technology Array Microphone Software Armoury Crate GameFirst V Splendid Sonic Studio Aura Core XSplit Gamecaster (Free) I/O Ports 1x USB3.1 Gen2 Type-C 1x USB3.1 Gen 1 Type-C 1x USB3.1 Gen2 Type-A 2x USB 2.0 Type-A 1x HDMI 2.0 1x 3.5mm headphone and microphone combo jack 1x Kensington lock Power 230W Power Adaptor 180W Power Adaptor Wi-Fi / Bluetooth 802.11ac 2×2 Wave 2 WLAN Bluetooth 5.0 *Bluetooth version may vary as the OS upgrades Dimensions 360 (W) x 268 (D) x 14.95~15.75 (H) mm Weight 2.1 KG Just ignore the color reproduction in the above image. It’s edited obviously (by official website). The bezels looks small on just the side ways. Top bezel is slightly wider than the side ones as it houses a webcam and some wiring under the hood. Bottom bezel is large with equally large and bold logo. Hope its not too shiny, it might distract gamers by reflecting lights. It looks large at the bottom which could have been a bit smaller. May be it’s just there to give an elevation to the display. I guess so. Keyboard is pretty and impressive. Lots of colors. Comes backlit. You can play in absolute darkness and ruin your eyes. Working closely with panel maker AUO, ASUS has worked their part to ensure the best displays for ROG laptops. The initial models of Zephyrus line doubled the refresh rate of conventional displays from 60Hz to 120Hz where as these newbies have pushed the refresh rate to 144Hz. The result is reduced blurring and ghosting with a lowered response time to 3ms! For a laptop, it has very narrow bezels to allow 15.6” display to fit into a 14.2” chassis. It has the IPS-type AHVA panel for excellent image quality. It covers 100% of the full sRGB range for rich colors, and wide has viewing angles even with split screens. . So it is sleek and slim, but you still can’t chop vegies with it. Wait few more years for it to be real. By the way it has a color changing lights to suit your mood but the only color that makes sense is orange as it has the highlighted orange design line on lead part. Also the trackpad color remains in red backlit. They could have added a full led highlight in design if at all they wanted to and also a color changing system for trackpad! It has an expandable vent at bottom for better cooling of the laptop. Much of a necessity for a gaming laptop. They call it Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) for the original Zephyrus. It opens along with the lid of the laptop underneath the chassis to allow more air flow. The intake measures 5mm on stretching across the entire back of the body resulting in increased airflow by 22% compared to traditional designs. There are additional vents in front for additional cooling of the system. Overall, it has an improved airflow model that includes doubled heat sinks, optimsed fans and optimsed design to make sure that the heart and mind of the machine doesn’t fry up. You need to take care of debris and dust gathering near the air inlets and outlets though to ensue smooth functioning every once in a while. To conclude, the model GX531GS looks gettable if you don’t want to compromise on performance. But if you want double space on your drive and can do with little less RAM and a lower spec graphic card, you can go for the GX531GM variant.
