Automatic Vehicle location or the GPS AVL can be described as a means that can be used for determining as well as transmitting the geographic location of a vehicle automatically. This data can be collected from more than one vehicle and a vehicle tracking system can also be used. This is particularly done for a picture of a particular vehicle. Commonly, this location can be determined using a GPS and the mechanism for transmission is called as SMS.

Driver behavior can also be judged by using this mechanism. There is also another purpose for tracking and it is to provide a service in order to manage a crewing staff and a large driver in a very effective manner. There are also many systems that are used in this mechanism. These systems include simple direction finding system, former LORAN- based locating, Signpost systems and today’s GPS- based locating.
