Minecraft fans, you are in for a treat. As per a recent announcement from Microsoft, the game will be making its way to Facebook’s Oculus VR headset within the next few weeks. Yes, you heard us right. Minecraft is finally coming to Oculus VR!
Minecraft has become a cult in its own right and as such, requires no introduction. The massive, engrossing, 3-dimensional game sees players travel around a lego-ish world, where they build shelters, make fires, manufacture survival equipment and defend themselves and their property from monsters(and zombies!!). There is quite a lot to do in the game which is why the game has been around for so long. The game is available in both single and multi player versions.
Taking a game of this complexity — not to mention fan-following — is obviously a very resource intensive process. However, the parties involved in the process obviously believe it to be worth it. The announcement regarding the availability of the game on VR was made on the game’s one year anniversary on Windows, while also confirming that it will be a free update.
Meanwhile. the timing of the update is certainly very suggestive. The VR version requires you to have Windows 10 installed on your system and coincidentally — or maybe not — Windows 10 is available as a free update only until today(yes! today!). Microsoft has been asking users to upgrade their systems time and again and with this cleverly placed announcement, it will probably get a fair share or atleast Minecraft fans to make the switch in a hurry.
Granted, the Oculus version of Minecraft uses a newer C++ variant of the game that lacks some of the advanced features in the original Java-based game. However, Microsoft is planning to fix the patches with an update, soon. Meanwhile, although Minecraft is already available in virtual reality — with the Samsung Gear VR, where it launched in April — the Oculus Rift version is expected to come with pro features like external camera tracking and hopefully introduce users to a more immersive experience.
