Google’s presence on your smartphone is getting a huge makeover

Google’s main smartphone application is one of the most underrated ones around. It comes bundled with all Android smartphones and yet hardly anyone (at least where I am) uses it. Google has now decided to give its app a makeover in hopes that the new interface will be able to better acquaint users with the Google search application’s myriad capabilities.

Okay so here is how things are working now. The basic card layout remains much the same. There are still a lot of cards, each of them for a particular news or event. However, Google has separated Stuff like upcoming appointments or flights from stuff you are interested in — say news, sports, and entertainment. So basically, you now have two different tabs on the app. While Upcoming gives you access to well, the upcoming things in your schedule such as flights, appointments and so on, Your Feed gives you news about all the stuff you are interested in — such as sports, your favorite band and so on.

In case you use the Google app, you are probably familiar with all the cool things it can do. The app can pull data out of related Google services such as the Gmail, Calendar, or Google Maps and can prepare a list and remind you about things like restaurant reservations, flights and so on. The first time I saw Google search telling me that I had a flight in a few hours and asking me if I would like to hail a cab — I was pretty impressed.

However, I still desisted from using the app as central to my planning because of the fact that all this useful information was usually buried under a load of non so urgent news articles about everything under the sun that I told Google I was interested in. The company appears to have realized that a lot of people have been shunning the app because of the same issue and as such, has come up with a solution by dividing the content into two different tabs.

So now, your personal feed will becomes the app’s main section, and will be what comes up once you fire it up. This feed will be filled with info about your favorite sports teams, people of interest, music and virtually everything else you signed up to receive news about. It of course, also uses your search history to make your feed more relevant and according to Google, the more you use the feed and the app — the better it will get.

Meanwhile, you can just switch over to the Upcoming section and check out all the important stuff like meetings, appointments and so on.

As per Google,

With this latest refresh of the Google app, a single tap will load your life’s interests and updates. We hope these go-to guides will help you stay organized and on top of the things you care about.

The feature is rolling out to both Android and iOS platforms today. Go knock yourself out!
