How Accurate Is Fitbit?

Like it or not, tracking your daily activities is a must in today’s lifestyle. There is no surprise that many of us now focus a lot on personal fitness to maintain the right body shape and for the right reason as well. With a completely different lifestyle, we hardly pay attention to the body, which tends to affect our health in long term.

While, each activity can be measured using specific products, nobody likes to have multiple gadgets in their pockets. This is where “Fitbit” comes in – a wearable brand that simplifies the work done on your behalf. Though it has multiple features but the question is how accurate is Fitbit? To give a better insight, here is a clear article to read.

The Personal Coach For Health

The company is a pioneer in releasing smart gadgets that serve more than what you can ask for. They have a list of products, which perform different functionality and usage as per the requirement. The products are installed with many features like Heart Rate Sensor, Calories Calculator, Distance traveled, Steps were taken and many more.

Practically most of Fitbit products like Charge, Surge, Blaze, Flex, etc… serve as fitness products. Having all these features is good but what is the functionality of these features? How accurate is Fitbit in displaying the results? All these depends on the data and sensors installed in the products. Some products like Fitbug Orb and Fitbit One are clip-based wearable while others are wrist-based. Hence, many times the question of accuracy does come in our mind. To explain to you how correct Fitbit, I have decided to write this article.

Accuracy Level of Fitbit:

Technically speaking, no product in the world is 100% accurate, so let’s take that away from the question and focus on the amount of accuracy it delivers. As per the company, they have the most advanced trackers in their products.

Multiple tests have been performed under various conditions to give a steady range of accuracy. Fitbit products are known to have the best accuracy in its class.

While, the company may boast about its accuracy, many users still question around that — is Fitbit accurate in terms of device usage? Practically, with lots of products from Fitbit, accuracy has found to be different from each one. For instance, clip based products are less accurate than the wrist products. Despite their features, accuracy is very important. Tasks, like walking and climbing floors, may have varying results depending on the usage.

Difference in Accuracy:

Clip-based products are prone to have less accuracy for specific tasks than wrist-based products. It is followed by a simple function of movements. Wrist based products are having sensors, can detect the hand movements with much ease and offer better results. For instance, Fitbit Charge HR is a great activity tracker, and depending on the sensors, it can easily track your hand movements in activities like running and walking, where your hand can easily move.

There may not be a big difference in the results, but wrist-based products will have better accuracy for some activities. Activities like floor climbing depend on the altimeter, a sensor to detect a change in atmospheric pressure. The results may vary with many facts like wind or severe thrust of air, hence, accuracy may be different on some occasions, but these factors must be considered.

Many of the products from Fitbit come with the myriad of features, which may be highly advanced in daily usage, but does it fulfill the basic purpose? Also, there is a frequently asked question: Is Fitbit waterproof? Perhaps, it is very important to understand the products capabilities before using them.

Fitbit products are water resistant but not waterproof. It means that it can resist from rainwater, sweat, and other water splashing activities but cannot function in water. If you are a swimmer, then the products will be damaged or stop functioning. Hence, it can resist water, but cannot be termed as waterproof.

Truth!

According to Fitbit,

Fitbit trackers have a finely tuned algorithm for step counting. The algorithm is designed to look for intensity and motion patterns that are most indicative of people walking and running. For the vast majority of customers, the amount of stray steps accumulated is negligible when compared to the entire day.

So, no one can able to say that “My activity tracker is 100% accurate!!!” and Fitbit is also no exception here. The wearables are like a new born baby to the tech industry, and there is lot more improve on the way. Let’s be hopeful for someday the fitness trackers can do more than what it does now with the 100% of accuracy.
