Image Sizes Guide for Social Media

Social Media platforms and Image Sizes

Content is King! That’s not entirely true. (Quality) Content is King! So with great content, comes great images. Social media platforms have become a sweet spot to share content and so images play a critical role in the promotion of the content. Here is a list of the most popular social media platforms and various types of images they allow us to post:

  • Facebook – Profile Picture, Cover Photo, Shared Images, Shared Link, Highlighted Image
  • Twitter – Profile Image, Header Photo, Tweet Image
  • Google+ – Profile Image, Cover Image, Shared Image
  • Instagram – Profile Image, Photo Image Size, Photo Thumbnail Size
  • Pinterest – Profile Image, Pin Image Size, Board Image
  • YouTube – Channel Cover Photo, Video Upload Thumbnail
  • LinkedIn – Profile Image, Background Image, Career Cover Photo, Company Logo, Banner Image

Facebook 

  • Profile Picture – 180 x 180 px (minimum)
  • Cover Photo – 851 x 315 px (recommended), 399 x 150 px (minimum)
  • Shared Images – 1200 x 630 px (recommended)
  • Shared Link – 1200 x 627 px (recommended)
    • square photo of minimum 154 x 154 px in feed & minimum 154 x 154 px on page
    • rectangular photo of minimum 470 x 246 px in feed & minimum 484 x 252 px on page
  • Highlighted Images – 1200 x 717 px (recommended) but will appear as 843 x 504 px on page

Twitter

  • Profile Image – 400 x 400 px, filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG
  • Header Photo – 1500 x 500 px (recommended), filesize (max): 10MB, filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG
  • Tweet Image – recommended is 1024 x 512 px which will reduce to minimum 440 x 220 px, filesize (max): 5MB for photos & 3 MB for GIF, filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG

Google+

  • Profile Image – 250 x 250 px (recommended), 120 x 120 px (minimum), filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG. Note: Final profile image is cut to circle format hence choose image accordingly.
  • Cover Image – 1080 x 608 px (recommended), 480 x 270 px (minimum), 2120 x 1192 px (maximum)
  • Shared Image – 497 x 373 (recommended). Minimum width is 497 px and height is scaled in ratio.

Instagram

  • Profile Image – 110 x 110 px (recommended), aspect ratio 1:1
  • Photo Image Size – 161 x 161 px (recommended), aspect ratio 1:1
  • Photo Thumbnail Size – 1080 x 1080 px (recommended), scaled down to 510 x 510 px, aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5

  • Profile Image – 165 x 165 px (recommended), filesize: max. 10MB
  • Pin Image Size – fixed width of 265 px, height is scaled.
  • Board Image – 222 x 150 px (large thumbnail)

YouTube

  • Channel Cover Photo – optimized for device
    • Mobile: 1546 x 423 (minimum)
    • Tablet: 1855 x 423
    • TV: 2560 x 1440
    • Desktop: 2560 x 1440
  • Video Upload Thumbnail – Videos uploaded should have aspect ratio 16:9 hence image thumbnail should also be 16:9 and 1280 x 720 px.

  • Profile Image – 400 x 400 px, filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG, filesize: max. 10MB
  • Background Image – 1400 x 425 px, filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG, filesize: max. 4MB
  • Career Cover Photo – 974 x 330 px, filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG, filesize: max. 2MB
  • Company Logo -max. 400 x 400 px, min. 300 x 300 px, filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG, filesize: max. 4MB
  • Banner Image – 646 x 220 px, filetype: JPG, GIF, PNG, filesize: max. 2MB

Third-party image design tools:

  • Canva.com allows to create social platform images by simple drag-drop of images, text, clip arts, etc. They have a set of free and paid images which can be used to create the required image.
  • Pablo – create images for social media platforms.

These online tools provide additional image sizes as well as custom image sizes which are not covered above.
