Find and share info, GIFs, and even the right emoji, without ever having to switch screens

If you own an iPhone, then Google wants to put the power of its Search box at your fingertips, no matter what app you are using.

Here comes Gboard, a new iOS keyboard app that has a search engine embedded into the keyboard, allowing you to find and share information, GIFs, and even the right emoji, without ever having to switch screens.

Anything you’d search on Google, you can search with Gboard. Results appear as cards with the key information front and center, such as the phone number, ratings and hours. So if you're in say a WhatsApp chat, with one tap, you can send it to your friend and you keep the conversation going.

You can search for more than just Google search results. Instead of scrolling to find it, you can search for “dancer” and find that emoji you were looking for instantly. You can also search for the perfect GIF, while Glide Typing lets you type words by sliding your finger from key to key instead of tapping - so everything you do is just a little bit faster.

“We wanted to bring the best of Google to Gboard, so you’ll see Maps, Translate, image and video search, News and others,” says Rajan Patel, the head of the product team that developed Gboard. “Initially, Gboard will not surface any information specific to you,” he added, hinting that a personalized keyboard is in the pipeline.

The iPhone keyboard field may be crowded, but Gboard really does stand out, and could well edge out competition from popular keyboards like SwiftKey, Fleksy, and Swype.

Gboard works in any app - messaging, email, YouTube - so you can use it anywhere on your phone, and is currently available in English in the U.S., with more languages (and country roll-outs) coming very soon.
