The Opel Crossland X will be marketed at the end of June 2017. The brand will then turn its back on two generations of Meriva by reinventing its small minivan and eyeing the SUV side. A strategy strictly identical to that of its new technical cousin the Citroën C3 Aircross. And for good reason…

:The Meriva is over! After two generations, the small minivan of Opel changes course. It now sports false airs of SUV, hence its name of Crossland X. This brings it immediately to the “real” urban SUV of the range: the Mokka X. With the difference that the latter offers the integral transmission on some versions And is slightly longer (4.28 m).

The inside space of a minivan

The Crossland X has a length of 4.21 m. It is 8 cm shorter than the current Meriva and 7 cm shorter than the Mokka X. The newcomer cleverly compiles the family virtues of the first and takes back a little of the look of the second, which ranks him in the category of Crossover.

Its high profile (1.59 m), good modularity (sliding seat on 15 cm and divisible in 40/20/40) and its volume of boot oscillating from 410 to 520 liters in five places, expandable to 1,255 liters when the Bench seat is folded down, are an asset for families.

Nevertheless, the current owners of the Meriva 2 will regret the regression of the loading volume (from 400 to 560 liters and up to 1,500 liters). On the other hand, for comparison, the Crossland X does better than its big brother the Mokka X which has 356 to 1,372 liters.

Crossland X: the skin of an SUV

The Opel Crossland X rides on the SUV trend. Its reinforced shields, marked sills and especially the wheel arches add visually to the world of recreational vehicles now so popular with customers. The black lacquered roof is as much a part of personalization as the minivans (Renault Scénic, Citroën C4 Picasso) and the SUV (Peugeot 3008, Renault Captur). Half way between the two, the Crossland X legitimately appropriates it. It also harmonizes the Opel range: its muzzle evokes the Mokka X and its custodian the Opel Adam.

But the Crossland X does not fall into the trap of the rear doors with antagonistic opening of the current Meriva. Moreover, the question does not even arise because its platform PF1 (Citroën C3 Picasso …), coming from the bank of PSA bodies, is technically not compatible with this system. Moreover, this architecture with middle foot did not favor the reduction of weight and consumption. Two factors that have argued in favor of the technical solution PSA. The Opel Crossland X will have a technical twin, the Citroën C3 Aircross, the replacement for the C3 Picasso.

PSA motors

If Opel could have installed its own engines under the hood, the economic reason prevailed. Therefore, all engines are of PSA origin. In essence, the range revolves around the petrol engine with three cylinders, 1.2 atmospheric 82 hp and 1.2 turbo declined in 110 and 130 hp. A manual transmission is standard, but the 110 hp version will also be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission (the PSA EAT6).

A GPL version will follow in 2017. In diesel, this is the 1.6 BlueHDi declined in 99 hp with a 5-speed manual gearbox and 120 hp with a 6-speed manual transmission. It will be replaced in the fall of 2018 by the previously unreleased 1.5 BlueHDi of 100 and 130 hp.

Driving under assistance

The Opel Crossland X is full of equipment. Full LED adaptive illumination, head-up display, front camera for recognition of speed limit panels, lane-keeping aid, front crash warning with pedestrian detection and autonomous emergency braking are part of the conduct. The 180 ° reversing camera and the Advanced Park Assist will facilitate the parking maneuvers of this urban crossover.

Absent in the Salon de Genève exhibition

Opel is the prime contractor on this joint program with Citroën, the German manufacturer unveils the first model.
