Filters Usually Work If You Choose The Best Tech Behind It

In recent times, many people have become highly sensitive when it comes to health matters. This is because they are aware of the many dangers that accompany unhealthy habits in terms of nutrition, hygiene, tech, and environment among many others.

It is true that the level of environmental pollution now is not the same as when it used to be 2 decades or even a decade ago.

The level of carbon emissions, dust Particles and allergens is so enormous that it is almost impossible to breathe good quality air anywhere. So, in as much as technology is driving economies forward, it is doing the reverse when it comes to health. At least, this was before the era of Air Filters, or is it?

About Air Filters

Air Filters come in two kinds: particulate and chemical air filters. Particulate air filters remove solid particles; while chemical air filters remove chemicals from the air.  Solid particles include dust, pollen, molds, bacteria and many others; while chemicals include mainly airborne molecules that contaminate the air like volatile organic compounds.

Filters are found in many buildings, homes and other man-made environments such as car filters and  aircraft air filters. They are made from different materials such as pleated paper, foam, static electric charge and spun fiberglass.

Types Of Air Filters

Sometimes when you are walking along a dusty road and a car happens to pass by, it is normal to remove your hand towel and place it over your nose. Actually, what you are trying to do is to filter the dust particles using a cloth so that they do not enter into your breathing system.

The effectiveness of the cloth as filter depends on its ability to block dust particles from passing through it. This is the same with the commercially made air filters that are made using different materials.

For instance, there are filters that only trap large particles, a variety of small particles and those that filter the smallest of particles depending on the material or tech that is used to make it. Most households typically use filters that capture most particles-large and small- without slowing down airflow.

Which Air Filter Is Good For Your Home?

All the air that passes through your home must pass through an air filter. A typical residential HVAC system usually consumes up to 50% of your home’s energy and this can be a total waste if you use a low quality filter or do not change your filter as frequently as you should. Most people go for standard air filters, yet do not bother to look at its efficiency in keeping solid particles out of their homes.

The minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) is used to indicate the efficiency of a filter to remove airborne particles, where the lowest value is 1 and the highest is 20. Panel air filters have a MERV of 1-4, while pleated surface filters have MERV of 5-13.  True EPA filters have MERV of 17-20 although they are not suited for a typical residential air filtering unit because they will increase airflow resistance.

Clean filters help keep your HVAC running smoothly and avoid high energy consumption because clogged filters make your HVAC to work harder. Apart from the efficiency, you will need to choose a filter size that will fit perfectly into the allotted space, otherwise leakage can occur.

The tech of air filters has improved over time. Your air filter will tremendously improve your indoor air quality if you choose one with a high efficiency in keeping airborne particles away.
