On the fourth day of the MWC, when the crowds started to disperse, and your feet felt like they were about to quit on you, the sense of the overwhelming experience was starting to settle in. Only after going through and experiencing the entire conference (or at least as much of it as it was possible to experience) you could begin to gasp the amount of effort it took to organize and pull off an event of this scope. A week past, and having returned home from beautiful Barcelona we feel obliged to share our thoughts on Mobile World Congress 2015.
Go Go Gadgets!
The first thing regarding the conference that deserves attention is the amount of new devices showcased at the event. Two phones from Microsoft, Samsung Galaxy Edge, HTC One, Lenovo Vibe, Smart watches from LG and Huawei, the list can go on and on. Were they all interesting and cool products? – Sure! All unique and innovative? – Not really. But what was really amazing, is the way each one of these devices was presented, showcased and the crowds they gathered. That was truly unique!
Mystery of Google Glass: Why it Failed?
Although the project was recently shut down, Google Glass was at the conference and still drew a constant stream of people wanting to try out the device. Being among them, one of SoftTeco’s finest has put on the device and after a while we knew why this technology never caught on: “Right as I put them on, I’ve noticed that the screen is too small to display any useful information and it takes a considerable amount of effort to focus on something that small so close to you your face” summed up Maxim Delendik, Head of Business Development at SoftTeco.
The Internet of Things
The way this year’s conference really differed from its predecessors is through the amount of attention directed towards the Internet of Things and the growing network of electronic devices receiving internet access and working with each other. Companies like IconMobileGroup have made quite a progress in this direction and were showcasing their solutions for a smart toothbrush and internet-enabled gym equipment together with OralB and Kettler. Smart house and smart car solutions were also prominent.
A lot of emphasis was placed on the role of mobile in marketing. A great number of tools and products for collecting and analyzing big data and individual consumer behavior were shown and discussed. Almost through every such discussion, a shift from globalization to personalization in digital marketing was evident. Traditionally, mobile advertising and traffic platform industries were well represented by such companies as Admob, Appnext, Similarweb and Voluum.
Another trend of 2015, mobile money, has also created quite a buzz during the congress. While already well-known solutions for NFC and contactless payments have dominated the mobile payments scene at the event, companies like LoopPay with truly innovative products have gotten much needed attention. Unfortunately, as in the case with smart watches, Apple, soon to be a major player in the mobile payments industry, was not present.
Although true innovation seemed to be scarce this year at MWC, we believe that this event is more of a kick-start for future innovation rather than a place for show off. While bringing together thousands of industry professionals, the congress has created a truly unique and positive environment for networking and connecting people with matching ideas and expertise. To those who truly has a passion for everything mobile and never has attended Mobile World Congress, we strongly recommend to put it on the bucket list.
